Love does not require unlimited access. Some relationships leave you wondering whether creating distance makes you disloyal, unforgiving, or unfaithful. You may love someone and still recognize that the relationship disrupts your peace. Faith and relationship wisdom require you to decide whether that person should continue having the same access to your life.
Apostle Tammy Bennett Carter understands this tension through 40 years in ministry and 13 years of pastoral leadership. She founded Kingdom Apostolic Ministries International and wrote Manifesting the Promise and 40 Days of Glory. Her life experiences have shaped how she understands relationships.
Faith Had to Become More Than Belief
Apostle Tammy grew up in the church, encountered God’s presence at a young age, and traveled as a youth evangelist. That foundation became important when adulthood brought challenges she could not navigate through experience alone. “My faith in God has been my lifeline,” she says.
She married young and later faced chaos that required difficult decisions for herself and her two children. She prayed for wisdom, moved her family toward freedom and peace, returned to school, and became a teacher. Her faith provided the clarity and courage needed to make responsible decisions.
Wisdom Must Guide the Next Move
Apostle Tammy connects decision-making to Proverbs 3:5-6. The passage instructs believers to trust God, avoid relying only on their own understanding, and acknowledge Him so He can direct their paths. For her, seeking God is not the final step after every other option fails; it is where the decision process begins.
Everybody Cannot Sit This Close
One of Apostle Tammy’s strongest lessons is that “every relationship has a proximity.” She carefully chooses who enters her life and how much influence each person has. She still loves people, but she no longer assumes that every relationship deserves equal access.
She points to Jesus and His disciples. Jesus chose twelve, yet Mark 9:2 records that He took Peter, James, and John with Him during the Transfiguration. All twelve were disciples, but those three experienced something the others did not. This example shows that love and access can remain distinct without diminishing the relationship’s value.
History Does Not Guarantee Access
Apostle Tammy believes the people closest to us can affect our peace, spiritual development, finances, and general well-being. Relationship discernment requires more than familiarity because history does not automatically determine where someone belongs today. Instead, examine what the relationship repeatedly produces.
Someone can care about you while lacking the capacity to support where your life is going. A relationship may need correction, clearer expectations, or greater distance without either person becoming an enemy. Changing access may mean sharing less, declining invitations, or ending conversations that repeatedly disturb your peace.
Prayer Must Lead Somewhere
Apostle Tammy begins her days with prayer and practices thankfulness, praise, worship, and meditation on Scripture. These practices help her evaluate relationships, opportunities, and major decisions. Consequently, she can move with wisdom rather than react from fear or confusion.
Matthew 6:33 directs believers to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Apostle Tammy says one of her greatest lessons has been making her relationship with God her highest priority. She believes other areas become clearer when she seeks His guidance before moving forward.
The Right Room Can Expand You
Relationship discernment does not focus only on who needs less access. It also helps you recognize people who can support your growth. Apostle Tammy says, “If you are going to grow, you can’t be the strongest one in the room.”
“You have to sit in rooms that will expand you and increase your capacity,” she says. Growth may require entering spaces where people challenge you to listen, learn, and develop. The right relationships can help prepare you for greater responsibility.
Purpose Does Not Require Unlimited Access
Apostle Tammy believes purpose includes assignments, and assignments often include people. Therefore, she does not view relationships as accidental or disposable. She recognizes that some people may connect to a specific season, responsibility, or area of service.
Still, purpose does not require unlimited access. Healthy relationships carry responsibility, respect, accountability, and care. When those qualities disappear, wisdom may require you to reconsider the person’s proximity.
Decide Who Gets to Speak Into Your Life
Consider who currently has access to your decisions, emotions, plans, and private struggles. Then ask what those relationships consistently produce. Examine whether each connection supports peace, responsibility, spiritual growth, and the work you believe God has called you to do.
You do not have to stop loving someone to change where that person sits in your life. You can care about someone without allowing that person to influence every decision or enter every private space. Love people with grace, seek God for wisdom, and choose access with intention.
