Rev. Dr. Darwin Little: A Life Guided by Faith 2026-10-25T18:12:55-04:00 Dr. Teresa A. Smith, AKA Dr. TAS

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Life does not always follow the path we imagine. Responsibilities change, loved ones pass away, and unexpected experiences influence how we see ourselves and the world. For Rev. Dr. Darwin D. Little, a journey shaped by military service, ministry, family, and personal loss has strengthened his commitment to faith, leadership, and serving others.

From the Sandhills of North Carolina to communities across the United States and around the world, Little has encountered challenges and opportunities that influenced his outlook on life. His experiences offer insight into the values that guide his ministry and his book, When the Pastor Moves: Real People. Real Transitions. Real Hope.

How Military Service Shaped Little’s Leadership

Before entering ministry, Little served in the United States Marine Corps. He considers that experience one of the most important influences on his development as a man and leader. Military service taught him lessons about leadership that would remain with him throughout his life.

However, Little identifies his calling into ministry as the experience that had the greatest impact on him. He believes that calling brought him closer to God and enhanced the leadership training he received in the Marine Corps. Together, these experiences helped shape his approach to responsibility, personal growth, and service.

For Little, leadership is connected to the beliefs and experiences that influence a person’s decisions. His journey demonstrates how lessons learned in one chapter of life can continue to influence another. The transition from military service to ministry became an important part of his spiritual development.

Finding Strength Through Faith and Personal Loss

Little’s spiritual journey has included deeply personal challenges. He has experienced the deaths of his father, brother, mother-in-law, and daughter. Through these losses, he credits his relationship with God with providing strength and comfort during difficult times.

Little describes faith as a major influence in how he handles problems, disappointments, challenges, and difficult people. His relationship with God has helped him navigate circumstances that required patience and spiritual strength. He believes that God remains near during life’s most difficult moments.

Psalm 34:18 reminds believers that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. This scripture reflects the comfort Little associates with his spiritual relationship. His experiences also illustrate why grief and faith can exist together as people continue adjusting to life after loss.

The Spiritual Practices That Guide His Daily Life

For Little, faith is not limited to church services or special occasions. Prayer, reading Scripture, studying God’s Word, and seeking God’s guidance are central to his daily routine. He believes these practices help him understand how God would have him live and respond to others.

Family also plays an important role in maintaining balance. Little values spending quality time with loved ones and having family members who support one another through prayer. He considers these relationships essential to his personal and spiritual well-being.

James 1:5 encourages believers to seek wisdom from God. Little’s commitment to prayer and Scripture reflects his belief that spiritual guidance should influence everyday decisions. His approach connects personal faith with the responsibilities and relationships that shape daily life.

Why David’s Story Continues to Inspire Him

Among biblical figures, Little identifies David as someone whose life has consistently inspired him. He admires David because he experienced struggles, trials, and difficult situations yet eventually became king. Little also recognizes David as a man after God’s own heart.

David’s experiences hold particular significance for Little because they demonstrate that difficult circumstances do not necessarily prevent future opportunities. Through reading and studying David’s life, Little has found encouragement for his own journey. That biblical example continues to influence his perspective on perseverance.

Little’s favorite Scripture, Galatians 6:9, reinforces this belief: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”. He also draws inspiration from Marcus Garvey’s statement, “If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.” Both messages encourage his belief in perseverance and having confidence when pursuing goals.

A Ministry Journey Across Communities

Little’s spiritual journey has taken him through different communities and regions. He recalls traveling from Lilesville and Hamlet, North Carolina, to Monroe and Rutherfordton, then to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and the Tidewater region of Virginia. His journey eventually brought him back to the Sandhills of North Carolina.

He describes these experiences as both challenging and exciting. His travels also provided opportunities to meet people he never imagined encountering and to visit destinations around the world. These experiences became part of the broader journey that shaped his outlook on life.

One lesson Little emphasizes is the importance of never giving up on people or looking down on others. He believes God can use anyone, regardless of where they are or what circumstances they face. That belief reflects the value he places on people and the possibilities he sees in their lives.

When the Pastor Moves: Understanding Church Transitions

Little’s experience in ministry provides context for his work as an author. In When the Pastor Moves: Real People. Real Transitions. Real Hope., he addresses the emotional and spiritual challenges that can accompany pastoral leadership changes. His book recognizes that when a pastor moves, the experience can affect an entire congregation.

Church members may struggle with grief, damaged relationships, uncertainty, or questions about leadership decisions. Pastors and their families may also face challenges while adjusting to new assignments and communities. Little addresses these concerns through Scripture, Wesleyan tradition, pastoral experience, and practical ministry guidance.

The book includes the Shepherd Transition Model, a Pastoral Transition Toolkit, anonymous case studies, reflection questions, and prayers. It also provides guidance for congregations, pastors, presiding elders, bishops, and pastoral families. Through these resources, Little addresses the importance of healing, communication, and understanding during pastoral transitions.

Living Each Day With Faith and Purpose

Throughout his journey, Little has maintained a belief in God’s presence and faithfulness. He recognizes that everyone experiences shortcomings and challenges, but he believes those experiences do not place people beyond God’s care. His spiritual outlook encourages compassion, perseverance, and continued personal growth.

Psalm 118:24 captures an important part of his approach to life: “This is the day the Lord has made and let us rejoice in it.” Little connects this scripture to his appreciation for each day and the experiences his journey has provided. Even with the challenges he has encountered, he continues to recognize opportunities for joy and connection.

Little’s story reflects a life influenced by service, family, spiritual commitment, and personal experience. From military leadership to ministry and authorship, his journey illustrates how faith can remain central through changing responsibilities and difficult circumstances. For readers navigating their own seasons of change, his experiences offer an opportunity to reflect on perseverance, relationships, and the beliefs that guide their lives.
