Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Peter McNeil‘s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of faith, resilience, and adoption, much like the inspiring paths of other famous people who were adopted, such as Marilyn Monroe, Bill Clinton, John Lennon, Steve Jobs, and Faith Hill. Born into a challenging environment, Peter’s path from adopted child to successful filmmaker demonstrates how love, support, and purpose can profoundly shape a life. His story reflects Romans 8:28 NIV: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” From foster care to a meaningful career, Peter McNeil’s journey inspires others to see how purpose can emerge from even the most challenging beginnings.

Adoption and Faith: Peter’s Early Life Challenges
Peter’s life began with a pivotal decision. His birth mother, in an act of love, placed him in foster care, hoping it would lead to a better future. Though painful, Peter later recognized this as a profound gift, one that allowed him to find stability and support through adoption.
While in foster care, Peter met his future adoptive brother, Kevin. Both were adopted by the McNeil family, who provided the love and belonging he longed for. Tragically, Peter’s adoptive father passed away soon after, leaving the family in financial hardship. However, the love and security of his adoptive family gave him a strong foundation. Isaiah 41:10 ESV brought him comfort: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” These early experiences shaped Peter’s resilience and creativity, which became the building blocks of his future in film.
Finding Purpose Through Writing and Faith
Peter’s sense of purpose grew during his military service, where he turned to writing as a way to process his emotions. Writing allowed him to explore complex feelings related to family, identity, and belonging all intricately tied to his life as an adopted child. During this time, he watched Mo’ Better Blues, a film that ignited his passion for storytelling. Inspired, Peter felt a deep calling to create stories that resonate on an emotional level.
This inspiration led to his first book, Postal, which he later adapted into a screenplay. Guided by Proverbs 18:16 KJV, “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” writing helped Peter embrace his journey as an adoptee and turn it into an inspiring narrative.
Discovering His Purpose: Faith, Adoption, and the Healing Power of Writing
As Peter’s faith deepened, he found that adoption was a key part of his resilience and creative identity, leading him into his filmmaking journey. This journey was shaped by his experiences as an adopted child and driven by a desire to inspire others.
Building a Career as an Adopted Filmmaker

Peter’s journey in film and writing blossomed despite the unique challenges he faced as an adopted child. He encountered obstacles like funding difficulties and project delays, but he persevered, strengthened by his faith and the resilience his adoptive family instilled in him.
Peter saw each challenge as part of a larger, divinely guided purpose, finding inspiration in Ephesians 1:5 NIV: “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” This verse reminded him that his path, though difficult, was chosen with love and intention. Also, his adoption had given him more than just a family; it gave him a foundation to live out his calling with strength and purpose.
When COVID-19 delayed his production plans, Peter took the time to refine his screenplay, Urge, a work that explores self-discovery, resilience, and purpose reflecting his own journey. Encouraged by his wife, Pam, he clung to Ecclesiastes 3:1 MEV: “To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” This belief in divine timing helped him stay grounded and motivated as he built a meaningful career.
Mentoring Others Through Adoption Insights
Understanding the importance of family, Peter co-founded Brothers for Life, a nonprofit that mentors underserved youth. Drawing from his own adoption experience, Peter and his team provide guidance and stability for young people searching for identity and purpose. With six other mentors, he works with young men of color, helping them make positive life choices and navigate challenges.
Through Brothers for Life, Peter imparts the lessons he gained from his adoption journey, recognizing the power of family. Guided by Proverbs 22:6 KJV, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Peter’s background as an adopted child allows him to connect with youth facing similar struggles, encouraging them to see beyond their immediate hardships and find their potential.
Embracing His Story: Faith, Adoption, and Transformation
Peter McNeil’s journey from adoption to professional success demonstrates the power of faith, resilience, and purpose. As a filmmaker and mentor, Peter lives out Jeremiah 29:11 NIV: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future.” His story shows that, with love and support, even challenging beginnings can lead to fulfillment and impact.
Now a successful filmmaker and mentor, Peter’s life experiences inspire others to embrace their own journeys. His story affirms that love, whether through birth or adoption, has the power to transform lives. Through storytelling and mentorship, Peter encourages others to live with purpose, overcome adversity, and recognize their unique paths. His life serves as a reminder that with determination, faith, and a supportive foundation, anyone can turn hardship into strength and achieve their dreams.
