When You Want a Mulligan

My husband loves golf. He’s a good player too. Who knows – maybe he’ll even play on the senior group one day. Occasionally, he and I play miniature golf. I’m not even good at that. Hubby picks on me because I swap back and forth between swinging left and swinging right. Inevitably (typically early on), I mess up. I  run my ball into the windmill. I miss the hole by just an inch. Sometimes I miss the ball altogether as I swing my club into the air. So, I call a mulligan. A mulligan means I get another chance at getting it right. I get to start over, and none of my penalty strokes count. Although I messed up, I know that I can have another chance to get it right. And, sometimes I do get it right. Sometimes, I even get a hole in one (and in the Shaler household, this means I automatically win.)

This is kind of the way it is with God. When we mess up, He gives us another chance. A mulligan. We simply have to ask Him to forgive us. One of my favorite verses is 1 John 1:19, which reads, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” And, not only does God forgive us, but He removes that sin far from us (as far as the East is from the West, according to Psalm 103:12).  Praise God for second chances to think and act more like Christ. Each day – each moment- gives us another chance to try again. To turn away from our sin, to receive forgiveness from our Heavenly Father, and to try again. And it’s not just in golf, but in every area of our lives. So, yeah, sometimes I call a mulligan. How about you?
