Curse of money when centrality of Life loses out to it

Last updated on: December 12, 2012 at 7:54 am   By Desh Kapoor

We recently saw the headlines in India that have focused on the dramatic demise of two ultra rich brothers, Ponty and Hardeep Chadha, who made a fortune from their liquor and real estate businesses.  In a moment of anger, both the brothers died in a matter of few minutes.  The unbridled greed for getting more …. and more, without scruples ostensibly led to disputes and both of them lost their lives in a mutual shootout in New Delhi. The lesson... Read more

Kerala High Court ruling on marriage after conversion: death-knell for Love Jihad?

Last updated on: December 11, 2012 at 3:52 pm   By Desh Kapoor

In a rather interesting judgment,Kerala High Court has ruled that Marriage which follows a conversion will be invalid in the eyes of law.  In this case, a Muslim man and a Hindu girl married after the Muslim man had converted to Hinduism.  Interestingly, it was the girl’s father who objected!  Not just that, the court also ordered that unless the marriage is complete under the Special Marriage Act, the girl – who is NOT a minor – will have to... Read more

Are Tattoos an advanced form of Acupunture?

Last updated on: December 11, 2012 at 1:50 pm   By Desh Kapoor

Tattoos today are more a fashion statement.  In fact, in some cases, they signify rebellion to tradition in modern society.  But that may not have always been true.  Tattoos, it seems, may have been used to help in alleviating some illness or health issue in prehistoric times.  Interestingly, an Iceman who lived 5300 years ago knew enough of his biology to know the accupunture points and meridians back then!  Isn’t it surprising? “The earliest evidence we have of tattoos, not... Read more

Pakistani media’s obsession of Indian TV and movies

Last updated on: December 10, 2012 at 11:12 pm   By Desh Kapoor

This is one of the favorite topic amongst the Pakistani TV anchors.  They have pride – which they should, everyone has – for their work and country; and are against India and Indian content on media.  They view it as a cultural invasion.  And in this program, this popular Pakistani anchor creates the vision of a conspiracy going on as to how and why the Indian content is brought in. Honestly, I was confused watching it.  From threatening to tax... Read more

Last updated on: December 10, 2012 at 2:19 pm   By Desh Kapoor

Two new books have come which discuss the culture of growth and consumption in the western world and the limits to Capitalism. Here is a discusion on Economist Podcast about the two books and some of the interesting points being made: Blind Growth puts Good life itself in peril We are richer than before, but we are also more productive – and these two work against each other at individual level. Experts agree no other politician has done for Gujarat what Modi has

Last updated on: December 10, 2012 at 11:20 am   By Desh Kapoor

Experts are now unanimous that no other politician has done for Gujarat what Modi has been able to do.  No wonder the Gujaratis dont seem to want any other party or “leader” replace him. Explains former IIM director, professor Bakul Dholakia,”Modi has improved the living conditions and the earnings of almost nine% of the poor in Gujarat over the past several years. And nine% of a total 6 crore population means an impressive 54 lakh.” Dholakia points to sections of... Read more

Has Congress ditched Nehru-Gandhi family in Gujarat Election ads?

Last updated on: December 10, 2012 at 10:58 am   By Desh Kapoor

Indeed, that is an interesting observation.  I have not seen the ads in Gujarat, but I would like the readers to share what they have seen and if this is true? Modi said, in last 60 years history, the Congress party has always campaigned with the photographs of the Nehru/Gandhi dynasty. “But in Gujarat election campaign, Congress has not used the photographs of Nehru, Indira, Rajiv, Sonia, Rahul in any of the advertisements. Why they had to withdraw their leaders... Read more
