Babies start learning their Mother’s language while in her womb
Last updated on: January 4, 2013 at 3:18 pm By Desh Kapoor
In a very interesting study, the scientists have found that the babies can differentiate sounds between their native language and a foreign one right from birth. Their study suggests that they are hooking on to their mother tongue right in the womb itself. Sensory and brain mechanisms for hearing are developed at 30 weeks of gestational age, and the new study shows that unborn babies are listening to their mothers talk during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy and at... Rape Map of India: Insightful, Indicative and Useful
Last updated on: January 4, 2013 at 11:47 am By Desh Kapoor
The following “Rape Map of India” is very interesting. In 2011, a total of 24,206 rape cases were registered in India, as per the National Crime Records Bureau. The map gives the distribution of the cases. Obviously, reporting of rape cases in India is not the same as reporting of a rape case in, say Sweden. Many go unreported in India. So, while this gives an indication of regional occurrence, it shouldn’t be taken as truth for overall numbers. As... Read more

Gobbledygook Analysts, Reverse Hatred and Targeting Culture will not solve India’s Rape problem!
Last updated on: January 3, 2013 at 9:52 pm By Desh Kapoor
Sanjay Srivastava is professor of Sociology at the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi. In his article in The Hindu, he suggests that somehow Swami Vivekananda’s photograph and his pose with folded hands somehow is responsible for installing “masculinity” in the country in the name of Nationalism. (Taking the aggression out of masculinity) Well, if I take that utterly ridiculous gobbledygook as some “creative psychological truth”, then Nanak’s upturned hand trying to bless everyone does the same thing. Here, a... Read more

What was internet upto through the eyes of Stumblers
Last updated on: January 3, 2013 at 6:47 pm By Desh Kapoor
StumbleUpon has been my most important discovery in the last year. It opened up a new world for me as a blogger to share my writings. And it has brought in new readers who are interested in the content they come for. Since SU show content based on your liking of certain categories and the person is open to new experiences, new type of content helps. And that is where Drishtikone has benefited tremendously from being part of the SU... Read more

Remember Balpreet Kaur? She is the Sikh girl with facial hair, whose picture was posted on Reddit and taken potshots at because she, a Sikh – wore a turban, had facial hair and a woman’s breasts. The story took a turn when the lady saw the pic which had made her an instant Reddit sensation, negatively albeit, and posted a very dignified and remarkably sane reply. “Maitri Karar”: Gujarati Social Custom of keeping mistresses by circumventing Hindu Marriage Act
Last updated on: November 1, 2022 at 1:14 pm By Desh Kapoor
In Gujarat, there is a social tradition that is used to circumvent the provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act by men so they can “have another woman” in their lives. Hindu Marriage Act only allows one wife. Polygamy is a punishable offense. In Gujarat a system prevailed in which a man and a woman entered into a friendship agreement, a legitimate contract before a magistrate. It had a social and legal sanction and was popularly known as “maitri karar”. Later... Read more

Damn… Facebook forcibly likes a page for me!
Last updated on: January 2, 2013 at 10:45 pm By Desh Kapoor
Remember this article I had written sometime back about how even people who are dead long back were “clicking on” Like button on Facebook for some sites peddling products, that while alive they wouldn’t have touched with a 100 ft long pole? (Now even the Dead Can’t Keep Away from Facebook!!) In that post there were instances where people – living – were also seeing pages showing up as “Liked” which they would never do. Apparently, Facebook has taken care... Read more
