Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran: Nuclear Proliferation and Diplomacy of “Quid Pro Quo”.

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 8:13 pm   By Desh Kapoor

It has been argued by many analysts and journalists that Pakistan did supply nuclear warheads to Saudi Arabia.  Of course, Pakistan did give the Nuclear Reactor – albeit an old one – to Iran.  An interesting article by Pervez Hoodbhoy.  He is a Nuclear Scientist and has a Doctorate in Nuclear Science from MIT.  He writes about the relationship between Pakistan and Iran, and Pakistan and Saudis, and the entire Nuclear dynamics. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia’s footprint in... Read more

Jaipur Literary Festival and its Global audience

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 4:33 pm   By Desh Kapoor

Aarti Betigeri on why all the global celebs – like Salman Rushdie and Oprah Winfrey – were centerpiece in a Literary Fest in Jaipur?  Finally, a literary congregation which has made writing and reading “sexy” and “global”. The Jaipur Literature Festival had relatively humble beginnings: Its main purpose was to put literature, both in English and local languages, on the radar for Indians. It seems to have worked. Now, the festival is widely recognized as a destination for thinkers and... Read more

Oprah’s Indian Fascination and Discussion on India as an “Exotic Interest”

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 4:00 pm   By Desh Kapoor

Oprah Winfrey went to the Jaipur Literary Fest and had something interesting to share about her experience in India.  As interesting as it is, I wish India wasn’t addressed as if it was some kind of an exotic bird or an animal.  Whenever someone from outside of India – specially West – comes over, s/he finds there is an energy, that is missing in other places and so comes out with interesting comments – either out of political correctness (if... Read more

India’s Energy Conundrum: Which way to go?

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 2:56 pm   By Desh Kapoor

Despite all the talk for ages now, India’s energy situation has remained unresolved.  For all the progress that India is slated to do in the coming years, the lack of proper infrastructure, of which energy is the most crucial component – will be a key villain.  Unless the resources are used properly and private players are better utilized, there can be little increase in productivity.  SEBs have basically run India’s energy situation into the ground!  And they are steeped in... Read more

Afghans have a tough time with high prices and low food stocks and Pak locks land route

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 2:39 pm   By Desh Kapoor

There has been a constant discussion in Pakistan on how it “helps” Afghanistan and how the Afghans aren’t thankful enough.  This news item shows how much the Afghans are dependent on the land route from Pakistan to get their basic This act will only increase the tensions and mistrust between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is not good for the overall Af-Pak issue. With snow piled deep in front of his small Kabul shop and a border shutdown enforced by Pakistan... Read more

13/7 Mumbai blast case solved? But when will justice happen?

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 12:08 pm   By Desh Kapoor

“Cracked the case” is fine.  But what about the justice?  If we look back to last 20 years, which terrorist has been brought to justice until now?  Not one!  And why?  Those who should get the Death Penalty also are being kept on with the justice done because of a skewed sense of appeasement. Claiming to have cracked the serial blasts that rocked Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar in south and central Mumbai, Rakesh Maria said the arrests have... Read more

Reading of Satanic Verses by 4 authors in Jaipur lands them in trouble

Last updated on: January 23, 2012 at 1:36 am   By Desh Kapoor

Salman Rushdie didn’t come to Jaipur Literary festival. But four authors read from Rushdie’s “Satanic Verses” at the festival. This has created a big hue and cry now. Such is the terrorism of the Islamic community within India and the fear among all people, that the organizers seem to have capitulated to the pressure. The Salman Rushdie row refused to die down on Sunday with a police complaint being filed against the four authors who read out portions from the... Read more

Taliban Shoots down 15 Pakistani Soldiers in Revenge

Last updated on: January 22, 2012 at 10:41 pm   By Desh Kapoor

A Taliban commander comes on and after saying he is going to shoot his captives as a revenge for his people having been killed by the Government. Then he shouts “Allah-o-Akbar” (Allah is Great) and shoots 15 military personnel down. The situation wouldn’t be anything strange given the reputation of Taliban but for the details of the captives. The Captives were 15 soldiers of Frontier Constabulary of Pakistan Armed Forces. The killers were members of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan – basically Pakistani... Read more
