Came across a news item today, where a Pakistani couple – 83 year old Ilyas Ashar and 66 year old wife Tallat Ashar had kept a deaf and mute Pakistani girl, – they had brought all the way from Pakistan, as a slave – when she was 10.  She is now supposed to be 19 or 20.

The girl was not only ill-treated, tortured and abused, but she was also raped by this 83 year old guy.

Speaking through an interpreter and using sign language, the woman thought to be 19 or in her 20s described how she was allegedly hit with a rolling pin while forced to work for no money, made to sleep on a concrete floor in a bolted cellar and sexually abused.

When prosecutors showed her a picture of Ilyas Ashar, she said: “He’s the one who has sex with me.”

She said Ashar’s wife would repeatedly strike her with her ring, sometimes when she made too much noise by setting dishes on the table.

One can only imagine the level of torture for the poor soul, who couldn’t hear her abuser walk down the steps, nor could shout when being raped!

And what kind of people would be who do such things.  A few years, an Indian mission employee – Neena Malhotra kept a lady Shanti Gurung as a slave in her apartment.

Why do people like to slave another person from the same culture and background as a slave?

What drives people to get to such low levels of existence as was the case with the Pakistani couple?
