A Bible handbook can be a great tool for enhancing your Bible study./Photo courtesy of B&H Publishing and Momentum Influencers.
Bible study is a vital component of every Christian’s spiritual growth. It allows you to delve deeper into the Scriptures, gain a better understanding of God’s message, and apply its principles to your daily life. However, studying the Bible can sometimes be challenging, especially when you are faced with complex theological concepts, historical and cultural contexts, or the need for in-depth commentary. This is where a Bible handbook comes in as an invaluable study tool.
What is a Bible Handbook?
A Bible handbook is a comprehensive guide that provides a wealth of information about the Bible. It serves as a companion to the Scriptures, offering a concise summary of each book. It also delves into each book’s historical and cultural backgrounds and theological insights. Further, it includes in-depth commentary, definitions of key words, and explanations of key concepts.
Benefits of Using a Bible Handbook
A Bible handbook is designed to enhance and enrich your study experience. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned scholar, you will find that this resource enhances your accessibility to, and enjoyment of, the Scriptures.
Gives a Comprehensive Overview of the Bible
One of the primary benefits of using a Bible handbook is the opportunity to gain a comprehensive overview of the entire Bible. This tool will help you understand the structure, themes, and key messages of each book. It will also clue you in to each book’s relevance to the overall biblical narrative. By providing concise summaries and outlines, a Bible handbook serves as a roadmap that guides readers through the vast terrain of the Scriptures.
Helps with Understanding Historical and Cultural Context
Another significant advantage of using a Bible handbook is the insights it provides into the historical and cultural context of biblical events. It offers background information on the customs, traditions, and societal norms of the time. In this way, it sheds new light on the meaning and significance of various passages. This enhanced understanding enables readers to more accurately grasp the intended message of the text. Thus, misinterpretations are avoided, and a deeper appreciation of the Bible’s relevance to contemporary life is obtained.
Simplifies Complex Theological Concepts
The Bible contains numerous complex theological concepts that can sometimes be challenging to comprehend. A Bible handbook comes to the rescue by breaking down these concepts into digestible explanations. Whether it’s the doctrine of salvation, the nature of God, or eschatological beliefs, a handbook provides clear and concise explanations that help readers navigate these theological complexities. It serves as a valuable resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of their faith and its foundations.
Provides In-Depth Commentary and Explanations
In addition to summarizing the content of each book, a Bible handbook offers in-depth commentary and explanations. It provides insights into the authorship and purpose of each book, thus helping readers grasp the nuances and intricacies of the text. With scholarly commentary and analysis, a handbook adds depth and richness to the study experience. Through this, readers are able to explore different perspectives and interpretations.
Enhances Personal Reflection and Application
Spiritual growth requires personal reflection and the application of key biblical principles. A Bible handbook facilitates this process by providing thought-provoking questions, discussion points, and practical applications. It prompts reflection on the meaning and relevance of the Scriptures, thus encouraging personal transformation and a deeper connection with God’s Word.
Saves Time and Effort in Researching
Researching various aspects of the Bible can be time-consuming and overwhelming, especially for those without formal theological training. A Bible handbook saves valuable time and effort by compiling the necessary information in one accessible resource. Instead of scouring multiple books or online sources, you can rely on your Bible handbook to provide accurate and reliable information. This will eliminate the need for extensive research.
How to Incorporate a Bible Handbook into Your Study Routine
To fully unleash the potential of your Bible study using a handbook, you will need to incorporate it into your study routine. Here are a few practical suggestions:
- Begin by reading the handbook’s introduction to familiarize yourself with its structure and purpose.
- Before studying a particular book of the Bible, consult the handbook’s summary and outline to gain an overview of the content.
- As you read through the Bible, refer to the handbook’s commentary and explanations to deepen your understanding.
- Take advantage of the handbook’s discussion questions and practical applications to engage in personal reflection and application.
- Use the handbook’s maps, charts, and illustrations to visualize the geographical and historical context of the Scriptures.
By integrating a Bible handbook into your study routine, you will experience a more comprehensive and enriching experience. In this way, you will be able to unlock the full potential of your Bible study.
Recommendations for the Best Bible Handbooks
When choosing a Bible handbook, you will need to consider several factors. Look for a handbook that is reputable, popular, and written by trusted scholars. Some highly recommended options include:
- The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook* by J. Daniel Hays, J. Scott Duvall, and C. Marvin Pate
- The Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook* by B&H Editorial Staff
- The New Unger’s Bible Handbook* by Merrill F. Unger
These handbooks provide comprehensive and reliable information. They are bestselling, well-reviewed, invaluable Bible study resources.
Old Testament Handbook

One of my favorite aspects of this bible handbook is the in-depth Hebrew word studies./Photo courtesy of B&H Publishing and Momentum Influencers.
One newly published handbook focusing on just the Old Testament books of the Bible is the Old Testament Handbook,* an elegant, full-color Bible handbook that includes robust summary content, charts (I especially love the charts that show how the Old Testament Scriptures point to Jesus), maps, 75 Hebrew word studies (I love Hebrew word studies!), illustrations, and more. Constructed with high-quality, foil-stamped cloth cover materials, a sewn binding, and a ribbon marker for easy referencing between pages, the Old Testament Handbook is designed to last a lifetime as a valuable companion resource for Bible study, teaching, and ongoing discipleship.
It features the highly readable, highly reliable text of the Christian Standard Bible. The CSB captures the Bible’s original meaning without sacrificing clarity, making it easier to engage with Scripture’s life-transforming message and to share it with others.
Discover your companion for deeper study and display. With this handbook, which is rich in both study and physical materials, you can navigate the mysteries of Old Testament narratives as you ask questions and grow in your knowledge of God’s faithfulness.
Watch this video, in which Momentum Influencers’ Jean Thomason interviews B&H Publishing’s Ashley Gorman, for more information about the Old Testament Handbook. I love how they both refer to this book as “beautiful.” As soon as I opened the box it came in, I was struck by the beauty of this book. However, I did not call it “beautiful.” The exact word I used to describe it to my husband was “sexy.” I asked him if it was weird to think of a Bible handbook as being sexy, and he said he wasn’t sure. Nevertheless, that was my first impression of this astonishing book. The more time I spend with it, the more I fall in love with it. I can’t wait until the New Testament Handbook comes out!
