The glory of God is a human being fully alive. – St. Irenaeus

I’m convinced that human life is meant to be lived and lived well.  That’s what God desires, and Jesus–in his person, his words, his deeds, his self–makes the good and abundant life possible.

In the ancient vision of the Hebrew Law, the good life had to do with sacrifice and eating and land.  In the life lived before God, the way we weave our clothing and plant our fields will matter.  In other words, it happens here, in people-time and people-space, through blood, sweat, and leprosy.  (And, um…) bodily fluids.  The good life happens on earth.

Jesus taught that he came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).  He’s the center.  He’s the Living One who holds the keys (Rev.1:18).  Death can’t touch him (Rom.6:9).  He’s the resurrection and the life (John 11:25).  He gives life to whoever he wills (John 5:21).  To whom else can we go?  Jesus has the words of eternal life (John 6:68).

And so here we are, with this calling and burden to live life truly and well, with depth–the good and abundant life.

There’s a secret to this kind of living (Philippians 4:12), but I’m convinced that it can be done–by us, wherever we are–and that Jesus shows us the way.  I’m convinced that Jesus shows us the best, most interesting, most meaningful way to walk in the world.  I’m convinced that when we live well and abundantly–when we’re fully alive–we give glory to God.

This is the work of the Doxology Project: to explore how all of life can be lived well to the glory of God.

Praise God to whom all blessings flow!
