Why our hope is not in the Election. The Beast/Anti-Christ #5
Last updated on: July 9, 2023 at 6:10 am By Rob Dalrymple
I noted in my post on Oct 18 “Before I proceed, I suppose that it might be of help if I make my landing spot clear. When it comes to political systems and the nations of the world . . . it is my conviction, which I believe derives from a careful study of the biblical text, that every nation/empire is corrupt—sure, I will concede that some are more corrupt than others.” Then, in part #3 I noted that based... Eph 1-3: He has made the two into one new creation: a devotional guide
Last updated on: November 3, 2022 at 9:56 am By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read Eph 1:1-23 Lest you think Romans stands alone as the pinnacle of Paul’s writings, we now turn to Ephesians. One of my favorite NT scholars of the last century, F. F. Bruce, said that Ephesians is, “the quintessence of Paulinism” because it “in large measure sums up the leading themes of the Pauline letters, and sets forth the cosmic implications of Paul’s ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles.”2 Another notable scholar, Raymond Brown claimed that only Romans... The anti-Christ is right in front of us and why didn’t know: The Beast/anti-Christ #4
Last updated on: July 9, 2023 at 6:12 am By Rob Dalrymple
The geopolitical order is not just a matter of world politics, of empires and kingdoms; it is also a matter of people going hungry, of families not being able to sustain themselves, and of the rich and the powerful making sure that the system continues working for the benefit of those in power, even if it means hunger and starvation for others.[1] The New Testament opens with an enormous proclamation: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is... Gal 4-6: Fruit of the Spirit; a devotional guide
Last updated on: October 20, 2022 at 6:40 am By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read Galatians 3:15-29 The question that Paul is addressing in the chapter is: “who constitutes the children of Abraham?” Are we children of Abraham because we follow the Law? Remember, “following the Law” means that we do the things that distinguish Jews from Gentiles: namely, circumcision, food laws, and Sabbath keeping. Or, are we children of Abraham by faith in Jesus Christ? One of the keys to understanding Paul’s argument is that he concludes by arguing that what is... Read more

Do we live in the midst of the empire? The Beast as empire #3
Last updated on: July 9, 2023 at 8:43 am By Rob Dalrymple
NB: I would like to begin by stating that it is my conviction that this series of posts may be the most important series I have written—though I do not deny that I am biased in this assessment. And I reserve the right to make this declaration about a future series. I say this because I believe it is critical for the church today, especially as we endeavor to move forward amidst the political quagmire that has engulfed our country,... Read more

Gal 1-3: What do we do with these Gentiles? A Devotional Guide
Last updated on: October 14, 2022 at 1:06 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read Gal 1:1-9; Acts 13-14 The letter to the churches of Galatia is widely acknowledged as Paul’s first letter (and maybe the first book of the NT). Galatia was not a city but a region. Thus, this is the letter to the churches (plural) of Galatia (2). The region of Galatia was located in central and slightly eastern Asia Minor (i.e., modern-day Turkey). The extent of the region Galatia at the time of the NT is somewhat contested but... Read more

Who/What is the Beast/anti-Christ? And why you should care #2
Last updated on: July 9, 2023 at 6:15 am By Rob Dalrymple
In my first post in this series, I suggested that the answer to this question is of “utmost significance.” NB: we interrupted this series of posts with a 4-part series on the Mark of the Beast and 666 (see: here for #1; #2; #3; and #4), as well as a few time-sensitive posts: Why I celebrate indigenous peoples day and not Columbus day and a post on the scandal that broke regarding the National Women’s Soccer League. Where is this going?... Read more

2nd Cor 10-13: Paul’s apostolic defense: a devotional guide to 2nd Cor #3.
Last updated on: October 6, 2022 at 2:15 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 2 Cor 10:1-18 As we noted before, 2nd Corinthians is Paul’s most autobiographical work. A large part of this is the result of Paul’s continued need to defend himself in order that they might accept him as an apostle. In chapters 10-13, Paul addresses groups with whom he disagrees in order that these matters may be settled before he arrives. In 1-11, he refers to some of the insiders who regard Paul as “walking according to the flesh”... Read more

Why I celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day and not Columbus Day
Last updated on: October 10, 2022 at 9:09 am By Rob Dalrymple
‘YOU CANNOT DISCOVER lands already inhabited.’[1] This is the opening line in Mark Charles and Soong-Chan Rah’s excellent work, Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery. NB: I recently interviewed Mark Charles for the determinetruth podcast. You can find the episode here. Happy “Indigenous People’s Day.” I say this to the few surviving indigenous people. At the same time, this holiday is not one that I celebrate with pomp and fanfare, but with remorse and... Read more

The Abuse of Women continues. We cannot remain silent!
Last updated on: October 8, 2022 at 11:56 am By Rob Dalrymple
News broke this week of the former US attorney General Sally Yates’ report regarding the systemic abuse that plagues the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The report stated that the league is one in which abuse and misconduct had become systemic. The report found that the abuse of female soccer players is rooted in a deeper culture of women’s soccer beginning in youth leagues. Should we be surprised? We live in a culture in which women are devalued... Read more
