Kings/queens and priests! Creation and our Worldview #4
Last updated on: March 13, 2023 at 9:37 am By Rob Dalrymple
Humanity made to rule! I finished the last post by noting that humanity was made to rule (Gen 1:26). God, as an act of love, gives His sovereign power to humanity and empowers them to rule in his stead! NB: Gen 1:28 adds that in addition to ruling humanity was also to “subdue” the earth; which likely indicates the task of agriculture. Subduing the earth, however, does not indicate that they were given the authority to do as they wish.... Read more

Titus, Philemon, Hebrews #1: a devotional guide
Last updated on: January 13, 2023 at 8:26 am By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read Titus 3:1-15 Paul concludes his letter to Titus with a list of exhortations that Titus is to “remind” those in his churches (1-2). Although the items in the list may come across as basic Christian duties, we must remember that Paul was speaking into the Roman world. In that world, and to a lesser extent even today, it was reasonable to “malign” (2; or “speak evil”) others in order to defend one’s social standing. One’s place in the... Read more

Why Genesis is critical: Worldviews #3
Last updated on: January 21, 2023 at 3:28 pm By Rob Dalrymple
When it comes to understanding the Christian worldview the book of Genesis is critical. Unfortunately, I am not sure that it is critical for the reasons that many Christians have come to believe—reasons btw which I was taught and I taught others for many years. Let me explain. Common approaches to determining a worldview If I were to ask “what is the purpose of life?”, or “what is your goal in life?”, I suspect that many Christians would say something... Read more

2 Tim/Titus devotional guide
Last updated on: January 13, 2023 at 8:11 am By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 2 Tim 3:1-9 It is critical for understanding today’s passage to recall that the entirety of 2nd Timothy is Paul’s personal correspondence to Timothy with regard to Timothy’s fulfilling his ministerial calling. Paul intensifies the importance of Timothy’s maintaining his faith and continuing his ministerial responsibilities. He warns Timothy of the dangers of false teachers, by making him aware of the crisis that awaits the Church in the “last days” (1). The fact that Paul encourages Timothy to... Read more

Can’t we all just get along? The problem with pursuing Truth! Worldviews #2
Last updated on: January 6, 2023 at 6:40 pm By Rob Dalrymple
I left off last time by asking: What sort of things influence our worldview? The answer is that almost everything affects our worldview. Of course, this starts with our life experiences, as well as the things we were taught when we were young. But, as I will note below, there are other factors also. Now, if life experiences play a role, then you might think that the older we are the more refined our worldview is—after all, I know some... Read more

1 & 2 Timothy: Devotional guide
Last updated on: December 28, 2022 at 4:20 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 1 Tim 6:11-21 Paul closes this letter to Timothy by turning his attention back to Timothy. He does so with a series of strong imperatives: “flee,” “pursue” (11), “fight,” “take hold” (12), and “keep” (14). The command to “flee all this” is counterbalanced by the command to pursue “righteousness, godliness faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness” (11). Paul’s command to “fight the good fight” (12) must be understood in light of the whole of his message. As Paul says... Read more

Our worldview matters more than we realize. And we probably have some things wrong: Worldviews #1
Last updated on: January 6, 2023 at 6:41 pm By Rob Dalrymple
It is critical to understand the baggage (if I can call it that) that we bring to the table. Whether it is a discussion of politics, matters of science, ethics, or issues that confront our daily lives, the fact of the matter is that we all approach these topics or decisions with a prior set of assumptions, and these assumptions often radically affect what we are even willing to believe or do. NB: I know that I am in the... Read more

1st Timothy: devotional guide #2
Last updated on: December 28, 2022 at 4:37 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 1 Tim 3:8-16 Paul continues his teaching on the requirements for ministry by addressing the role of deacon. The word “deacon” literally meant one who waits on tables or serves. It is used in the NT of Jesus (Matt 20:28; Mark 10:45), the apostles (Matt 20:26; Mark 10:43), Timothy (4:6), and as a common designation of a NT leader (1 Cor 3:5; 2 Cor 3:6; 6:4; Eph 3:7; 6:21; Col 1:7, 23, 25; 4:7). In the present passage,... Read more

2 Thess/1 Timothy #1 A Devotional Guide
Last updated on: December 11, 2022 at 6:05 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 2 Thess 3:1-18 Paul asks the Thessalonians, “Pray for us” (1). Paul’s request is not a generic thing. Nor is he simply speaking Christianese. He follows this request with two purpose clauses. First, they are to pray for him in order that “the word of the Lord will spread rapidly.” Paul knew well that “church growth,” or the effectiveness of the proclamation, was a result of the work of the Spirit. Therefore, prayer was needed. Second, they are... Read more

1 Thessalonians: A devotional guide: part 2
Last updated on: December 5, 2022 at 6:15 am By Rob Dalrymple
Monday: Read 1 Thess 4:9-18 Beginning in 4:9, Paul appears to be responding to questions raised to him—perhaps in a letter (see: 4:9, 13; 5:1). The first question is concerning brotherly love (9). The problem here was caused by the Roman practice of patronage. It appears that some of the Thessalonians were relying on their patrons for support (as clients). The involvement in the system caused them to be involved in affairs that stained the reputation of the church and... Read more
