Gaza When will this damnable war end, When will we speak up?
Last updated on: January 27, 2024 at 4:06 pm By Rob Dalrymple
Well, they did it—though I don’t believe this is something to be celebrated. Israel has officially inflicted 20 times more casualties on Gaza than the damnable attack of Oct 7 leveled on Israel. According to Al Jazeera, the death toll in Gaza has now exceeded 25,000. This, of course, does not include the 8,000+ that are missing—likely dead—under the rubble. Nor does it account for the 62,000+ that are injured. But death does not even begin to address the human... Read more

The ICJ Ruling: Israel, Gaza, & the Road to Genocide
Last updated on: January 29, 2024 at 11:16 am By Rob Dalrymple
The International Court of Justice has issued its ruling on the South African charge that Israel’s war on Gaza is on its way to genocide. One of the more common mistakes in the reporting on this case has to do with the actual charge. The claim is often made that in order to prove genocide one must be able to determine Israel’s “intent.” It is argued that since “intent” is hard to prove, the claim of genocide is baseless. The... Have we been lied to? America’s war machine and the Beast
Last updated on: February 5, 2024 at 6:37 am By Rob Dalrymple
The Pax Romana (~27 BC-AD 180). Did you know that the Roman Peace was established by bloodshed? What Rome called peace meant slavery, rape, devastation, and even death for virtually everyone else. In chapter 3 of The Business of War, Myles Werntz argues that one of the reasons why Achan (see Joshua 7) was punished by God was because he took the spoils of war in order to profit personally. Werntz contends, “The wealth gained cannot be for one’s private... Read more

When we love we look like Jesus: Business of war #2
Last updated on: January 15, 2024 at 7:20 am By Rob Dalrymple
In my last post, I began a look at the war on Gaza from the context of the business of war. NB: See my post from Dec 8, 2023 “Challenging the Church to be the Church in a time of war.” (If you haven’t read that post, please do so before finishing this post). My bottom line: inflicting war and violence is the way the nations operate and it is antithetical to the way of Christ and what it means... Read more

The war on Gaza and the business of war #1
Last updated on: January 8, 2024 at 8:05 am By Rob Dalrymple
As we enter a new year, a year that is certain to be contentious as the American political scene begins to gear up, I would like to suggest that perhaps the best thing the Church can do is to get back to the root of the Gospel call of radical discipleship. I have argued that war begets war and violence begets violence. This is my paraphrase of Jesus’, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take... Read more

Why “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Xmas” are Christian phrases
Last updated on: December 26, 2023 at 6:08 am By Rob Dalrymple
As Christians around the world celebrate the birth of our King, many struggle with what are thought to be compromised expressions, “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Xmas.” I can still hear my mom (God rest her soul) mumbling, “They are taking ‘Christ’ out of Christmas.” No, mom, they are not! As text messages to family, friends, and colleagues are sent on this Christmas day, I want to asure you that “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Xmas” is not only acceptable but very... Read more

The war on Gaza and the evangelical response; Part 2
Last updated on: December 15, 2023 at 10:26 am By Rob Dalrymple
I began last week’s post with a statement from a peacebuilder in the Middle East. The statement, which is an indictment of the evangelical church, essentially says that evangelicals are considered a liability and not a help when it comes to working for peace. The problem is that most evangelicals do not see the problem. After all, some are indeed working for peace and are open to learning new things. Thus, for them, this statement runs counter to their experience... Read more

Challenging the Church to be the Church in a time of war
Last updated on: December 8, 2023 at 2:34 pm By Rob Dalrymple
“Evangelicals are the most dangerous people on the planet. We don’t see them as either the hope of the world or irrelevant. They are a liability and we are committed to working around them” (anonymous). This statement comes from a leader who is working on the front lines to make a difference in the Middle East. I have been writing and speaking over the last few months about the need for the church to be a voice for peace and... Read more

Israel-Gaza: Do those in power really want peace?
Last updated on: December 3, 2023 at 8:14 am By Rob Dalrymple
I regularly hear that Israel has no choice but to wipe out Hamas because they cannot make peace with those who are not willing to make peace with them. Is it true that there is no hope for peace because although Israel is willing to make peace with the Palestinians, Hamas has no objective except to destroy Israel? When we first came to learn of Hamas’ horrific deeds on Oct 7 and we saw the videos and pictures of their... Read more

Encouraging war is neither Christian nor loving: Why the Church must advocate for peace and justice in Israel-Gaza
Last updated on: November 24, 2023 at 10:22 am By Rob Dalrymple
I continue to be flabbergasted by Christian leaders who promote war and violence as the solution to the issue in Gaza. I am constantly hearing things like: “Hamas is evil and must be eradicated”—as if Hamas will actually be eradicated by this war (more on this point later); and “Just war theory says that self-defense is acceptable and even necessary”; and, Then there was Russell Moore’s article, “Bothsideism About Hamas is a Moral Failure. I believe that this sort of... Read more
