Oreo rainbow cookies and looting in LA: Is Hosea’s warning relevant to us today?

Last updated on: October 13, 2020 at 5:30 am   By Jim Denison

Oreo has released limited-edition rainbow cookies in support of the LGBTQ+ community. They are not sold in stores; to receive a pack, you need to share a photo of “you and your friends at last year’s Pride parade, your chosen family, or how you show allyship for others.” In other news, crowds in Los Angeles gathered in defiance of COVID-19 guidelines after the Lakers won the NBA title Sunday. Looting broke out, and bottles and fireworks were thrown at police.... Read more

Now all eyes are on the Senate Judiciary Committee as it begins four days of hearings on President Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court. “The Brett Kavanaugh sleaze machine is back”: The power of courageous people in chaotic days

Last updated on: October 9, 2020 at 5:30 am   By Jim Denison

As Judge Amy Coney Barrett prepares for Senate confirmation hearings scheduled to begin on Monday, conservatives are warning that “the Brett Kavanaugh sleaze machine is back.” As an example, they are citing a Washington Post article titled, “Amy Coney Barrett served as a ‘handmaid’ in Christian group People of Praise.” The group changed the title of “handmaid” to “women leaders” three years ago in light of the dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. Nonetheless, the Post used that misleading title in... Read more

Who won the vice presidential debate? A powerful statement of repentance and engagement

Last updated on: October 8, 2020 at 5:30 am   By Jim Denison

The vice presidential debate last night between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris was largely a civil affair. Predictably, partisan analysts were convinced afterward that their party’s nominee won the event. (The fly that landed on Mr. Pence’s head received widespread attention as well.) Going into the debate, expectations were unusually high. In fact, some were saying that the stakes were higher than for any previous vice presidential debate in history.  University of Virginia scholar Barbara Perry notes that, based on... Read more

Farmers harvest 1,000 acres of neighbor’s crops after he suffers heart attack: How to be the change we need to see

Last updated on: October 7, 2020 at 5:30 am   By Jim Denison

Lane Unhjem was working on his farm near Crosby, North Dakota, when his combine caught fire. While fighting the flames, he went into cardiac arrest and was hospitalized. If his farmstead had gone unharvested, the loss would have been devastating for his family. In response, sixty local farmers came together with eleven combines, eleven semitrucks with trailers, and several grain carts with tractors. In about seven hours, they harvested approximately fifteen thousand bushels of canola and thirty-five thousand bushels of... Read more

Last updated on: October 5, 2020 at 5:43 am   By Jim Denison

The White House released a photograph yesterday of President Trump working out of Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, while undergoing treatment for COVID-19. His medical team said he could be released as soon as today if his condition continues to improve. Global stocks rose this morning on the news. Learning from Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death and Amy Coney Barrett’s life

Last updated on: October 2, 2020 at 11:36 am   By Jim Denison

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on September 18, 2020. Eight days later, Judge Amy Coney Barrett was nominated by President Trump to fill her seat. The former was known as a liberal icon; the latter is known for her conservative judicial philosophy and personal worldview. But what we learned about Justice Ginsburg from her death shows us that she and Judge Barrett had more in common than most Americans might think. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was Jewish, a fact made especially... Read more
