Temple Changes I Can’t Experience Yet
Last updated on: January 5, 2019 at 6:18 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Last week I enjoyed my last ordinance at the Laie Temple before it closed for its scheduled, two-week biannual cleaning. I inhaled deeply as I left the temple knowing I would miss my weekly plug-in time. Cleaning closure is expected. I didn’t expect any emotional upset about it during the next two weeks. Temple Changes While Our Temple Is Closed Late on New Year’s Day, a friend asked if I’d heard about impending temple changes and sent me something she’d... Read more

Christmas Goodies Ingredients: A Lesson about Justice and Mercy
Last updated on: December 28, 2018 at 3:56 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Shopping is not something I generally enjoy. I’m not sure how I missed that “female gene.” I used to joke about needing “retail therapy,” but I’ve swung pretty far back on the pendulum and now view shopping as a loathsome task. Still, there are activities I enjoy that involve shopping as foundational. In order to drop off goodies, I need groceries to make those goodies. And with that activity in mind, Christmas rapidly approached. With all of my Christmas shopping electronically... Read more

Prophetesses
Last updated on: December 22, 2018 at 7:03 pm By Delisa Hargrove
I remember when I attended seminary and first read Joel’s prophecy that handmaidens would prophesy and recognize signs of the times in the last days. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour... Joseph the Just
Last updated on: December 22, 2018 at 5:37 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Little is written of Joseph who married Mary and became the mortal father of Jesus Christ. Historians prove that Joseph was an aged widower and a young man. Some think he had several children prior to his marriage to Mary. Others think he had several children with Mary. Still others think he had no children at all. The New Testament record begins as Matthew tells us Joseph descended from the tribe of Judah. Matthew comments that Mary was espoused to... Read more

When Grandma Leona Decided to Walk to the Temple in the Middle of Winter
Last updated on: December 15, 2018 at 7:45 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Both of my grandmothers loved the temple and made great personal sacrifices to regularly attend. In their golden years, both of them served in the temple—my maternal grandmother in the Provo Temple and my paternal grandmother in the Arizona Temple. Grandma Leona Decides to Walk to the Temple in the Middle of Winter One very dark, frozen, winter morning, Grandma Leona dressed for her 5:00 AM shift at the temple. She never missed a day. She loved her shift and felt... Read more

When Grandma and I Ran into Ty Detmer
Last updated on: December 15, 2018 at 5:08 pm By Delisa Hargrove
During the 1990 fall semester of my sophomore semester at BYU Provo, I lived with my darling grandmother who was the in-home caretaker of Elfie Boyle. Our house was a mile or so from BYU campus. While I worked and went to school, grandma and Elfie watched their favorite TV shows. Both grandmothers avidly watched BYU football every Saturday afternoon. Grandma was the biggest BYU football fan I knew at the time. The initial months of 1990’s football season were... Read more

What “Bearing Each Other’s Burden” Means to Me
Last updated on: December 8, 2018 at 10:37 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Recently, I wondered “Why Do We Think We Have To Go It All Alone?” My friend Roxanne Carlile responded with an interesting comment that flooded my mind with thoughts. Our society is so interesting. The way we think we need to appear as if we have it all together. But also, the way we seem to have no idea how to respond when someone does go out on a limb and bare their soul. We are so uncomfortable with any... Read more

Women Leading, Teaching, and Ministering with God’s Power and Authority
Last updated on: December 8, 2018 at 10:28 pm By Delisa Hargrove
During the April 2018 General Priesthood session of General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson made a statement that I can’t get out of my mind. It perfectly summarizes the desire of my spiritual quest and how I view women’s roles in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “We see faithful women who understand the power inherent in their callings and in their endowment and other temple ordinances. These women know how to call upon the powers of heaven to protect and... Read more

Music Lifts My Tired Soul
Last updated on: December 1, 2018 at 1:24 pm By Delisa Hargrove
Sometimes after the ruckus of running a million different directions and not feeling like I really accomplished anything, my soul is tired. Sometimes after hearing of tragic news near and abroad and acknowledging humanity’s pains and sufferings, my soul is tired. Sometimes after hearing of the devastating and often horrific trials people are enduring, my soul is tired. Sometimes after adulting day in and day out, my soul is tired. Sometimes after repeatedly putting off the things I want to... Read more

Choosing to be Consumed or Sanctified by Unquenchable Fire
Last updated on: November 29, 2018 at 2:13 pm By Delisa Hargrove
And the saints also shall hardly escape; nevertheless, I, the Lord, am with them, and will come down in heaven from the presence of my Father and consume the wicked with unquenchable fire. One of my seminary students imagined a vengeful Jesus zapping the wicked with unquenchable fire. I love hearing what others imagine or expect the fulfillment of prophecy to be like! It seemed like a great moment to talk about unquenchable fire and how our choices impact our flammability. Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-nego and the Fiery Furnace... Read more
