As my congregation’s music coordinator, I select the hymns for Sunday’s Sacrament Meetings. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the release of a new hymnal in 2027 and, in anticipation of that, releases new hymns every three or four months. I schedule our congregation to sing a new hymn as the opening song each Sunday.  We typically sing the new songs in numerical order, but I have reordered songs when I felt a song’s message fit better on a different Sunday.

While at the organ one Sunday, Kathy stopped by to ask me about hymn #1045 “Jesus Is the Way.”  She said she’d heard it sung by some incredible Tongan saints on a reel and hadn’t remembered hearing the song sung in our ward. She wondered if she’d just missed it one Sunday.

I confidently said I thought we’d sung it, since we were singing #1059 that day. I checked my Google sheet, and to my surprise, I did not see #1045 listed. It would have been sung during the holiday season, and I suddenly remembered swapping it out when the Church released some new Christmas hymns.  But apparently, I didn’t add #1045 back into the mix.

Church services were about to start, and I told Kathy I’d check more closely later and let her know.

Later at home, I verified that I had inadvertently skipped #1045.  In the search, I noticed that the next Sunday we were singing a new song about fasting for the second time. So I swapped out that song with #1045 and posted the update to the ward. (I post each week’s new songs to the ward Facebook page and the Relief Society GroupMe chat so folks can listen to the songs beforehand if they wish.)

The following Sunday, we sang #1045 “Jesus Is the Way.”

1. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, has said,

“Come in, oh, come ye in through me.”

By other paths we are misled;

Through Him we are made free.

Come in through Him,

Into the fold of God.

Our Savior, Jesus, is the Way—

The Savior of the world.

2. God’s servants, teaching in His name,

Will live His gospel strong and true,

For did not Jesus do the same?

He taught and lived it too.

Come in through Him,

Into the fold of God.

Our Savior, Jesus, is the Way—

The Savior of the world.

3. Our Savior is the precious tree

That bears the fruit so sweet and pure.

His truth that makes us ever free

Unchanging will endure.

Come in through Him,

Into the fold of God.

Our Savior, Jesus, is the Way—

The Savior of the world.

As I played the organ while listening to the ward sing “Jesus Is the Way,” I had some introspective thoughts.

My friend Kathy gently posed the question. I thought I knew the correct answer, but actually, I did not. I’d inadvertently omitted something.

I saw Kathy as a type of the Holy Ghost who gently reminds and redirects, especially when I inadvertently omit something the Lord wants me to do. In that moment, the Holy Ghost reminded me of something a little more important that I’d inadvertently omitted because of my full plate. I’ve really sought to follow the Lord’s promptings with exactness, and I had neglected one.

It was a beautiful teaching and an aha moment, and an incredible reminder that while Jesus IS the way, He also cares about me on my way with Him.
