The other day I was joking with my husband about what we’d change if we ruled the world.

We agreed that drivers would always signal before changing lanes. I’d vote for toilet seats being left in the down position, even though my husband would say otherwise. And he would ban jeans with holes in the knees, even though I have nothing against them.
This is why we’ll never, ever agree on rules in the external world.
But there is a world we can rule, and we should.
The internal one. The world of our mind.
When we become master of that domain with the help of the Holy Spirit, we get to happily live out our lives no matter what position the toilet seat is in.
This is one of the many teachings of A Course in Miracles, the inspiration for my blog’s title. Starting today, I want to be more intentional about sharing the lessons of the Course because it’s a path that leads to non judgment and self worth in a way other teachings don’t. I believe the world needs these teachings, especially now.
People have said to me over the past few months that they want to be able to think of this world differently. They want to be peaceful and happy, but instead they’re fearful and angry. They’ve seen family and friends take actions they never expected.
“How could someone I love support Trump?”
“How could someone I love take part in a protest march?”
More important, how can they still love that person, even though they seem to share such radically different views?
So today, I asked my inner guidance for a lesson from the Course and turned to this:
Do not value what is valueless.
Here’s the essence of what that means…
If we value something that will not last forever, we’re valuing nothing. In other words, if we value having our preferred candidate in the White House or jeans with no holes, we’re trying to rule a world that will never make us happy.
Also, if we give a thing away, we no longer have it. That’s how we know it was valueless. But if we give love, we have more of it. That’s how we know it has value. In other words, the shirt my husband got me for Valentine’s Day will eventually fade and develop holes, but the thoughtfulness of the gift will never go away.
The choice is simple. We either value what’s valueless, or what’s valuable. And the thing that’s valuable is remembering who we are as a child of God. Extending love into the world. Asking more from life rather than less. Honoring our own value.
Since we live in this physical world, we’ll have outward symbols of what we value, but our identity will not be attached to or dependent on them. Mother Teresa honored her grandeur with a vow of poverty. Warren Buffet honors his grandeur with a billion-dollar bank account.
It’s not about the form. It’s about whether we’re expressing our highest thought of who we are in the world.
So, it’s time to rule your world. What do you value in yourself? What are you here to do? What expressions of love bring you deep and lasting joy?
If you think you don’t know, ask your spirit guides. Ask for your fears to be healed so you can hear their message clearly. Take some deep breaths, quiet your mind, and remember your connection to the Divine.
Then do it again. And again. And again. The more you start ruling your own world, the less fear you’ll have about the one around you.
Blessings,
Deb
