An atheist as confirmation sponsor?

Last updated on: May 21, 2018 at 9:56 am By Deacon Greg Kandra

Some surprising news out of Ireland regarding a prominent politician. It amazes me that something like this is even an issue, or that it got this far. His support for abortion rights is problematic enough. But being an atheist is the real deal-breaker. Details: Waterford TD John Halligan claims he was banned from standing as sponsor at his godson’s confirmation due to his stance on repealing the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. Halligan is advocating a Yes vote this Friday,... Read more

Pope announces 14 new cardinals — including the papal almoner

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 6:04 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

From CNS: Pope Francis announced he would make 14 new cardinals June 29, giving the red cardinal’s hat to the papal almoner, the Iraq-based patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church and the archbishop of Karachi, Pakistan, among others. Announcing his choices May 20, the pope said that coming from 11 nations, the new cardinals “express the universality of the church, which continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all people of the earth.” Pope Francis’ list included three... Deacon candidate is the son of Holocaust survivors

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 5:35 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

What a story, via The Catholic Register in Canada: For Mark Neugebauer, his journey to the permanent diaconate is something he says he just “fell into.” A look at his story would beg to differ. It’s been a long, winding journey for Neugebauer, as you might expect for someone who was born and raised a Jew, the son of Holocaust survivors. His spiritual path eventually led to his conversion to Catholicism in 2009. Now, Neugebauer, along with his wife Sue,... Read more

Come, Holy Spirit: the beautiful message hidden in a chapel on Long Island

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 6:18 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

So I’m here in Bay Shore, New York, some 40 miles east of Queens and JFK Airport, leading a retreat for deacon candidates who will be ordained next year for the Diocese of Brooklyn. The retreat is being held at the Montfort Spiritual Center—at one time, a minor seminary for young men studying to be priests for the order founded by St. Louis de Montfort. The building itself is nondescript and uninviting, especially on a cold and drizzly Saturday. But... Read more

What does the royal wedding have to do with Pentecost? Everything.

Last updated on: May 19, 2018 at 1:08 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

From the sensational sermon by the Most Rev. Michael Curry, the first African American to preside over the Episcopal Church, who focused his sermon at the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday on “the redemptive power of love”: French Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was arguably one of the great minds, great spirits of the 20th century. Jesuit, Roman Catholic priest, scientist, a scholar, a true mystic. Some of his writings from his scientific background as well as... Read more

Stunning: in unprecedented move, all 34 bishops from Chile offer resignations to Pope Francis

Last updated on: May 18, 2018 at 10:29 am By Deacon Greg Kandra

Details: Every Chilean bishop offered to resign Friday over a sex abuse and cover-up scandal, in the biggest shakeup ever in the Catholic Church’s long-running abuse saga. The bishops announced at the end of an emergency summit with Pope Francis that all 31 active bishops and three retired ones in Rome had signed a document offering to resign and putting their fate in the hands of the pope. Francis can accept the resignations one by one, reject them or delay... Read more

Bishop approves alternative to Boy Scouts as a Catholic apostolate

Last updated on: May 17, 2018 at 3:27 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

The following press release landed in my mailbox a short time ago: Thousands of young men and their fathers across the country found their prayers answered yesterday when Most Rev. Michael F. Olson, bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas, officially endorsed the Troops of St. George as a Catholic apostolate. “After a careful review of the program and its contents, including its mission statement, curriculum, pedagogical structure, letters of Ecclesiastical approval, and statement of mission that faithfully reflects... President Trump marks Ramadan, noting ‘the richness Muslims add to the religious tapestry of American life’

Last updated on: May 17, 2018 at 2:23 pm By Deacon Greg Kandra

An interesting development, as reported by The Washington Post: Offering warm greetings on Ramadan and hosting an iftar meal have been standard White House behavior for decades during the major Muslim holiday — but not during the Trump presidency. That appears to be changing. Ramadan last year featured a White House holiday statement focusing on terrorism, including President Trump’s comment that the sacred holiday tens of millions observe “strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence.” The White House and the State Department... Demographic winter: U.S. fertility rate falls to record low for second year

Last updated on: May 17, 2018 at 8:47 am By Deacon Greg Kandra

From The New York Times: The fertility rate in the United States fell to a record low for a second straight year, federal officials reported Thursday, extending a deep decline that began in 2008 with the Great Recession. The fertility rate fell to 60.2 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age, down 3 percent from 2016, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. It was the largest single-year decline since 2010, when families were still feeling the effects of... Read more
