From La Stampa:
After the showers, the barber, the dormitory and the medical visits, what was missing was a laundry. Starting today, Monday, April 10, 2017, in Rome there will be “Pope Francis’ Laundry,” a free service for the homeless where – a release by bishop chaplain Konrad Krajewski reports- the needy will be able to wash, dry and iron their clothes and blankets.” One of the greatest difficulties for those who live on the road, along with that of finding food, a place to spend the night and public baths, is to wash and dry the clothes they wear, in many cases the only ones owned.
The initiative – the note continues – was urged by the Pope’s invitation, “to give concreteness ” to the experience of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. So was written on the Apostolic Letter Misericordia et misera, at the conclusion of the Jubilee: “The desire for closeness to Christ requires us to draw near to our brothers and sisters, for nothing is more pleasing to the Father than a true sign of mercy. By its very nature, mercy becomes visible and tangible in specific acts.” And “Here is a concrete sign wanted by the office of Papal Charities: a place and a service “to give concrete form to charity and at the same time intelligence to works of mercy as to restore dignity to so many people who are our brothers and sisters, called with us to build a “reliable city.’”
