Biblical Perspicuity: Absurd Anti-Catholic “Defense”

Biblical Perspicuity: Absurd Anti-Catholic “Defense” 2026-07-20T22:40:16-04:00 Dave Armstrong

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“Perspicuity” is a fancy word for “clear.” Yesterday (7-16-26) I posted my article, 50 Biblical Disproofs of “Evident Clearness” of the Bible: One of the Key Tenets of Sola Scriptura, and the Protestant Rule of Faith. I received a “response” to it (if indeed anyone can accurately call what he wrote a response) on my Facebook page from one Travis Wendinger.

I could find out very little about him on Facebook, except that he posted the Mark Twain saying above, which is appropriate to this exchange; also the fact that he is obviously a virulently anti-Catholic type of Protestant (a very small minority of the whole group; thank heavens!). His words will be in blue. I’ve corrected his typos except for three noted three with “sic.” Please pray for him (and all who think and act as he does in this pathetic display); thanks.

*****

Yeah! Down with God’s word! Great work, Dave Armstrong. Everyone should be highly critical of God’s divine revelation revealed by the Scriptures.

Yes, as obviously indicated by citing fifty passages from it: quite anti-scriptural! LOL

*

Yes, as if your post didn’t set out to attempt to prove the obscurity of God’s divine revelation. Truely [sic] the devil’s work. Sad Dave. Sad.

*

I am proving what the Bible teaches on the topic. Why don’t you address the passages I highlighted, or is that too difficult for you? My view is that the Bible is clear on almost all topics, with proper study (I’ve always found it to be so), but that human sin and rebellion and ignorance cause a lot of false doctrine. The problems lie with human beings, not God or the Bible itself. See my previous article on this, that gets into this second aspect:

*

I see that you’re attempting to play both sides of the fence — it’s clear when it suits your opinions. That way you don’t look like a heretic, but then you get to assert what God has said is unclear whenever it doesn’t suit your narrative or your opinion. Your problem is with God and what he has revealed in his scriptures. Openly sinful and dangerous to reject what God has revealed or to be critical of what he has revealed as if you know better than He.

*

I stand with the Lord and profess everything he has spoken is perfect and effective. Listen to what he has spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

Isaiah 55:7-11 (NIV) [7] Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. [8] “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. [9] “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. [10] As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, [11] so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

I pray you reflect on these passages before you continue your quest to denigrate the scriptures

*

It’s above your comprehension to understand my overall argument. You’re too trapped by your false premises and “either/or” hyper-rationalism under the guise of a stupefied ignorance and unwillingness to hear anything different from what you presently hold, no matter how biblical or how much it is common sense.

*

That being the case, you immediately accuse me of being a double-talking heretic and liar, and supposedly placing myself above God, precisely because you are unable to grasp my argument in the first place. You simply apply the usual standard, playbook anti-Catholicism to me. You’re apparently incapable of making a rational opposing argument.

*

This is so asinine and ludicrous that one wonders if you are a Catholic posing as an anti-Catholic, in order to show how theologically and logically bankrupt the position is. Or else you are so far gone that you are an ongoing caricature of the ridiculous anti-Catholic outlook.

*

Until your content testifies to the clarity, efficacy, and inherent authority of God’s word, I will continue to regard you as the two-faced heretic that you have proven to be.

*

Thanks for the textbook example of know-nothing anti-Catholicism. This very “enlightening” exchange will be on my blog. You can remain anonymous if you like (I offer you that option as an act of charity), but I would be fully justified in naming you there, since you have slandered me here in a public post.

Facebook friend Patti Sheffield added:

Travis, God’s Word isn’t limited to Scripture; His Word is the Son, as per John 1:1. To paraphrase St. Bernadette: Dave’s job is to inform, not to convince.

*

The Word of God is Jesus. Scripture is God’s word. Dave has taken up the devil’s work in creating doubt about what God has said. He is leading souls away from Christ by attempting to remove the authority of God’s word. Sad very sad. I hope he repents.

*

You still offer no reply whatever to 50 passages from the inspired word of God and revelation, the Bible. That is not respecting the Bible. That is the devil’s work: if you vainly imagine that you can ignore and rationalize away fifty passages from this revelation that you claim to be upholding. I “doubted” nothing whatsoever. I provided Holy Scripture: every word of which I accept as inspired and inerrant. I have an entire book defending the Bible from charges that it is self-contradictory, and another defending it from biblical archaeology and other forms of science.

*

Sadly, this is standard anti-Catholic methodology, that I’ve observed for 31 years online. Offer no argument, insult, damn the Catholic to hell, claim they are Satan’s deliberate agents (i.e., ad hominem tactics), and ultimately (as we see) insult and reject God Himself, by ignoring and discounting large amounts of His revelation.

*

It’s pathetic, but I don’t say you are damned or following the devil: just profoundly ignorant and a victim of the false presuppositions and premises of sola Scriptura. It’s very sad. You are accountable to God, however, for obstinate ignorance. He determines to what extent that is true in your case, not me. But when you ignore and oppose Scripture to this alarming extent, obstinacy is certainly a live possibility.

*

I say this for your sake, to warn you. You’re already guilty of serious, potentially soul- and salvation-destroying sin in your lies against me and treatment of God’s Holy Word.
*

Your threats of doxing and your self-proclaimed anti-Catholic victimization are of no consequence to me. I never made a claim against Roman Catholicism in my replies. How did you developed [sic] this idea of victimhood? Where was I prejudice of you [sic] ? My replies are true and factual, there has been no slander. Your position is clearly heretical according to God’s word. Try making arguments in support of God’s word, not on what you believe God failed to include in His divine revelation. His word is perfect, yours is ignorant and flawed.

Proverbs 26:5 (RSV) Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

I’ve been doing that up till now. We all see where it has gotten me.

Proverbs 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself.

2 Timothy 2:23 Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies . . .

I’ll be applying this wise advice henceforth. May God bless you with all good things.

*

Thanks for the blessing Dave. You have completely ignored the objections I have presented against your unbased judgement of me. Instead you have invoked selected passages of Scripture in an attempt to label me a fool. This is all sure evidence of your desires and motives in your OP. I pray your next post will be in celebration of the inherent authority of God and His word. Peace.

***

Ol’ Travis was still attacking me three days later, making even more of a fool of himself. Here is our comical exchange:

You really told that commenter [i.e., he himself]. How dare he defend God’s word. . . . Will your next document continue to explain how obscure God’s word is? Or will you continue to opine about God’s word being insufficient in instruction of the Christian Faith?

*

Right. Well, let’s see, I wrote a book about biblical archaeology in defense of the Bible, called, The Word Set in Stone: How Archaeology, Science, and History Back Up the Bible. Definitely an attack on Holy Scripture there! A Baptist pastor friend and a Lutheran pastor friend both gave it glowing reviews.

*

Then I wrote another scathing anti-Bible tome: Inspired!: 198 Supposed Biblical Contradictions Resolved. All out of my seething hatred of the Bible, of course . . . Ready to stop lying about me now?

*

I cannot wait for your next publication, sure to be highly critical of the Scriptures.

*

I was working on another anti-Bible rant last night, which will be my next book. It’s called Thy Word is Truth: The Bible Vindicated by Science & History. What have you done to defend the Bible? Here’s a Bible passage for you to seriously ponder:

Revelation 21:8 (RSV) But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all LIARS, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”

What are you implying Dave? What is the reward for people who wage war against God’s word? You know, the people who claim God is unclear, incoherent, and incomprehensible? The people who set out to prove God’s divine revelation is flawed in their opinion. The people who whisper in your ear: “did God really say that”?

*****
*

Summary: I reply to a scathing, insulting, slanderous anti-Catholic “reply” to my recent paper refuting the total “perspicuity” (or clearness) of Scripture from 50 passages in the Bible.
