Why Everyone Hates Donald Sterling But I Am Grateful For The Opportunity

Last updated on: May 9, 2014 at 9:30 am   By Crystal Blanton

Sterling is the most recent scapegoat for Americans around the issue of Black people in america, and that nasty word that many people have such a hard time saying….. RACISM. What actually happened was that Sterling’s incident placed a gigantic mirror in the face of society, reminding us of one of the things that many people want to ignore: that racism is alive and well in this day and age. Read more

My Favorite Moments; Happy 5th Anniversary Patheos! ‪#‎Patheos5Yrs‬

Last updated on: May 6, 2014 at 1:25 am   By Crystal Blanton

My favorite moments, as a writer for Patheos and with readers, are every single moment. I feel like I get the opportunity to explore one of the most challenging, often misunderstood, and complex issues around the intersectionality of ethnic culture and alternative spirituality. Being a Black woman has its own distinct culturally significant challenges, and moments of beauty and resiliency. The addition of Paganism to that path adds to the very interesting, multifaceted perspective and experience that I live, along... Read more

My Hair Doesn’t Get Longer, It Gets Tighter: A Symbol of My Path

Last updated on: April 29, 2014 at 6:04 am   By Crystal Blanton

I have come to understand that my life is not getting less complicated, just like my hair doesn’t get any longer. The longer my hair grows, the tighter the curl becomes, and the shorter the strand appears in its natural state. It is only until you pull the curl out of its natural pattern that you can see how long it really is, and how complicated it has become. Read more

Beltane Dreams: The Return of Hope

Last updated on: April 28, 2014 at 10:39 am   By Crystal Blanton

As a social worker, I encounter what feels like the darkness all the time: poverty, hunger, grief, sadness, drug addiction, and homelessness. And when things are their hardest, I know in my being that the wheel will turn, and spring will come. It is that light that illuminates hope in the darkness. Read more

Everyday Celebration: Happy Earth Day to the Mother and Birthday to the Dad

Last updated on: April 23, 2014 at 9:00 am   By Crystal Blanton

The miracle of living is something I often think about. It is incredible to think of the mystery behind how we are, who we are, where we are, living here on the planet. Read more

Surviving as a Black professional By Cecily Joy Willowe

Last updated on: August 27, 2014 at 10:06 am   By Cecily Joy Willowe

If you are a Black woman in America, you are bound to deal with many episodes of racism in your professional life. For myself, I often found the subtle racial and gendered microaggressions I faced in the professional world more exhausting than overt racism. It is the teachers who never listen, the bosses who overlook you and the people who just casually suggest that you are less worthy that give me the most mental distress. Read more

Both of these recordings, done by Solar Cross Temple and hosted on Thorn’s Elemental Castings podcast, show some of the current groundbreaking work that is being done. Listening to these, and being involved in one of them, makes me hopeful that these conversations are happening today. Read more

Bringing the Divine With Me

Last updated on: March 27, 2014 at 10:06 am   By Crystal Blanton

I heard the whispers of the divine say that I should create a physical reminder of spiritual space in the places that I spend the most time, but this week it became clear that I missed something very important in this. I need to bring the divine into my spaces, not just at home, but especially at work. Read more

A Community Influx: The Journey to Redefine the Umbrella

Last updated on: February 24, 2014 at 10:41 am   By Crystal Blanton

This community is not the same as the one I entered a little over 11 years ago. The Pagan community is growing to include some of the very intricate differences among its practitioners. This makes me hopeful, hopeful in ways that I never really thought I would be able to see for the future of this community Read more

Happy Birthday to Love

Last updated on: January 21, 2014 at 6:39 pm   By Crystal Blanton

King’s fight for equality wasn’t just about race, but also against the war, and against poverty. Days like this remind me that my spiritual quest does not begin or end with my devotion to the Lord and Lady, and makes me partly responsible for how King's dream moves forward. Equality is not a privilege that all people will receive, and it requires that we continue to work for it and towards it. Read more
