The Jordan Events Center is located behind behind another building on the west side of Redwood Road \u2014 or, for those of us unfortunate enough to still be tormented by unwelcome memories of the incredibly irritating old radio commercials for \u201cFurniture Warehouse,\u201d on \u201cRoad Redwood\u201d \u2014 in West Jordan, Utah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Jordan Event Center, a space that echoed with the wisdom of our scholars for a decade, is embarking on a new chapter. It is with a bittersweet sentiment that we share the news of the Jordan Event Center building being purchase along with our neighboring Cruise Lady building by Bountiful Travel. This change marks the end of an era for \u201cLearn Our Religion\u201d but we want to celebrate the remarkable 10-year journey that brought us together. One of our favorite parts of Christmas is the invitation from Jeri and Stephen M. R. Covey to attend an evening of superb music in their capacious home. \u00a0We attended last night. \u00a0And one of the measures of how much we like and look forward to the event is the fact that, although, to our surprise, we had obtained tickets for the annual Christmas concert of the Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square, we surrendered those tickets in order to be able to attend the Coveys\u2019 program.<\/p>\n
Just to give you some sense of it: \u00a0After a word of prayer, the program commenced with all of us singing \u201cFar, Far Away on Judea\u2019s Plains,\u201d led by Clayne Robison<\/a>. \u00a0That was followed by a violin performance, accompanied on piano, of a medley of \u201cAdeste Fidelis\u201d and \u201cAway in a Manger.\u201d \u00a0The BYU-student violinist, whose name I unfortunately didn\u2019t catch, recently won a national violin competition.<\/p>\n
She was a member of a BYU string ensemble \u2014 if I heard correctly, the section leaders from the string sections of the BYU Philharmonic \u2013that also played, as well as accompanying several of the subsequent numbers.<\/p>\n
An alto soloist from BYU then sang a unfamiliar setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\u2019s famous Christmas poem \u201cI heard the bells.\u201d \u00a0I think that I heard it said that she will shortly be singing with the San Francisco Opera.<\/p>\n
A substantial portion of the program featured the superb Lux Choral Society<\/a>. \u00a0According to the notes that I scribbled while they were singing, they performed \u201cOnce in Royal David\u2019s City,\u201d \u201cThe Holly and the Ivy, \u201cThe First Noel,\u201d \u201cO Holy Night,\u201d \u201cRise Up, Shepherds, and Follow,\u201d which probably originated as a spiritual among plantation laborers, and a spiritual entitled \u201cI am a Child of God\u201d that bears no resemblance or relationship to the familiar Latter-day Saint children\u2019s hymn. \u00a0I have always found one particular passage from \u201cO Holy Night\u201d especially stirring, and I did so again last night in their soloist\u2019s rendition:<\/p>\n

\nChains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
\nAnd in his name all oppression shall cease.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The absolutely transporting first number in their segment of the program, though, was Franz Biebl\u2019s setting of \u201cAve Maria,\u201d about which I myself wrote in a recent blog entry. \u00a0See \u201cThe Angel Of The Lord Appeared Unto Mary.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Unspeakably beautiful. \u00a0(The song. \u00a0Not my blog entry.)<\/p>\n
The male soloist from the Lux Choral Society also gave us a wonderful version of the Christmas carol \u201cSweet Little Jesus Boy,\u201d which was written in the style of an African-American spiritual back in the 1930s. \u00a0It was followed by a solo of \u201cWeeping Mary,\u201d accompanied by piano and violin. \u00a0I\u2019ve had a terrible time trying to find a recording of it online, but I did come up with this<\/a>, which will have to do.<\/p>\n
The alto soloist then came forward for a performance of \u201cO, Divine Redeemer,\u201d and we closed with Clayne Robison leading all of us in standing to sing Handel\u2019s \u201cHallelujah Chorus,\u201d which was followed, as every year, with wonderful food.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m grateful, today, that the Coveys have this annual tradition, and that my wife and I are included in it.<\/p>\n
