We drove up to Lauterbrunnen today, past Trümmelbach and all the way to Stechelberg at the end of the valley. When I first saw it, I immediately thought that Lauterbrunnen was exactly how I pictured Rivendell, the Valley of the Elves, in The Lord of the Rings. It was only many years later that I learned that J. R. R. Tolkien had, in fact, based Rivendell, the home of Elrond, on Lauterbrunnen. It is absolute perfection. Then we turned... Read more

My nearly two years as a missionary in German-speaking Switzerland had microscopically little impact, if any at all, on Switzerland, but an enormous impact upon me. I had visited Switzerland once before my mission (essentially to Zermatt, the Matterhorn, and Saas Fee) and had fallen in love with the place. It was where I hoped to be assigned for my mission and, to my astonishment, my wish (unexpressed, so far as I recall) was granted. Although I have no... Read more

Another long day, though it was long for a different reason: Our Becoming Brigham film crew is headed back to Utah, and my wife and I are now over on the continent. I very much regret missing General Conference this weekend. (I’ll catch up when we return home.) In my entire adult life, I’ve failed to listen to all of the Conference addresses only a few times and, every one of those times, it was because I was overseas... Read more

It’s past midnight here and, once again, I’m tired. It’s been a long day — on which, a bit more below. So I’m going to do the tired thing and share some passages that I marked in Stephen T. Davis, Risen Indeed: Making Sense of the Resurrection (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1993): People who reject the resurrection of Jesus typically do so on the grounds that the very idea of a dead man living again is absurd. Despite the fact... Read more

We finished up our English filming by returning today to the beautiful and historic village of Downham for a summing-up of what we all judge to have been a very successful trip. We’ve recorded some excellent material. I’m so grateful that Heber C. Kimball and the Lord chose Downham as one of his most successful mission fields. It’s not only historically fascinating but, happily, an extraordinarily pleasant place to visit and to contemplate the history of the Church there.... Read more

On Sacred Ground

We did our filming today in the picture-perfect little Lancashire village of Downham, which, for Latter-day Saints, has a powerful connection with the early apostolic missions to the United Kingdom — and particularly with that of Elder Heber C. Kimball in 1837-1838. It has maintained that apostolic connection down to recent times. While working in Preston, Elder Kimball was advised not to bother with Downham or its neighbor, Chatburn, because the people in those villages were irreligious and godless. ... Read more

This piece was posted earlier today on the never-changing website of the Interpreter Foundation, where, once again, nothing new has appeared for many years: Reprint: “‘Strong Like Unto Moses’: The Case for Ancient Roots in the Book of Moses Based on Book of Mormon Usage of Related Content Apparently from the Brass Plates,” written by Jeff Lindsay and Noel B. Reflecting on the Past

With his kind permission, I share here something that Jaxon Washburn posted yesterday (Monday) on his Facebook page: One year ago today, Thomas Jacob Sanford—an Evangelical Christian extremist with longstanding vitriol and collective hatred against the Latter-day Saint community—intentionally attacked an LDS congregation in Grand Blanc, Michigan in one of the deadliest incidents of anti-Mormon violence in the modern era. At approximately 10:25 am, just as the LDS ward was settling into their sacrament/communion service, Sanford deliberately rammed his... Read more
