Sehnsucht and “Pure Northernness”
Last updated on: July 11, 2026 at 6:59 pm By Dan Peterson
I don’t know whether I’m unique (weird?) in this regard or not but, when I hear an excruciatingly beautiful piece of music or see an achingly beautiful landscape — please note those two adjectives expressive of pain; they were deliberately chosen — I want to possess it in some way more than I actually can possess it. I’m not sure precisely how to express what I mean. I definitely don’t mean that I want to possess it in some... Read more

A new article, written by Todd Uriona, went up earlier today in Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship 69 (2026): 183-214. It is entitled “The Iron Rod Reimagined: Revisiting the Meaning of an Enduring Metaphor”: Abstract: The iron rod, presented so prominently in Lehi’s visionary dream (1 Nephi 8:19–24), has traditionally been conceptualized as a static handrail or balustrade guiding travelers toward the tree of life. While this imagery has provided meaningful theological guidance for many years,... Read more

The Gulf of Alaska and Yakutat Bay

We caught a cruise-line bus from Anchorage yesterday at about noon, driving down along Turnaround Arm We passed by what is left of the town of Portage, which was destroyed by the 1964 Alaska earthquake, when the ground beneath it suddenly sank about six feet (1.8 m), putting most of the town below the level of Turnaround Arm’s high tide. (Some places in the area sank even more.) The ruins of a few of Portage’s buildings remain, along with... Read more

Remote Viewing 1
Last updated on: July 8, 2026 at 12:24 pm By Dan Peterson
I begin with some famous and very apt words from the English poet and literary critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834): What if you sleptAnd what ifIn your sleepYou dreamedAnd what ifIn your dreamYou went to heavenAnd there plucked a strange and beautiful flowerAnd what ifWhen you awokeYou had that flower in your handAh, what then? Roughly a year ago, I read an interesting book by Paul H. Smith entitled The Essential Guide to Remote Viewing:The Secret Military Remote Perception... Read more

The principal reason that our little group came up from Utah and Arizona to Alaska a few days before we needed to do so was to interact with an element of our extended family, including a toddler, that lives here. But, of course, we’re also taking the opportunity to poke around the place a bit. Our first stop of the day today took us to the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which is dedicated to promoting active observance of Alaska... Read more

Some thoughts for today on religious tolerance and liberty
Last updated on: July 5, 2026 at 3:07 pm By Dan Peterson
Here’s a heartwarming story from the Salt Lake Tribune. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shouldn’t deceive themselves into imagining that we would be welcome neighbors and fellow citizens in a society in which “Christian nationalism” has become dominant: “Pete Hegseth’s spiritual adviser longs for a day when Latter-day Saints can’t hold office or possibly even vote: So where do Latter-day Saints fit in Doug Wilson’s vision for a Christian America? Well, they don’t.” Many Latter-day... Read more

My father occasionally asked me or various of my friends whether they have the Fourth of July in Canada. the typical answer was that No, they do not. After all, it’s a uniquely American holiday. To which he would reply that, in fact, they do have the fourth of July. It follows the third of July and immediately precedes the fifth. (Capital letters are invisible in spoken American English.) Well, happy Fourth of July — happy Independence Day —... Read more

Last updated on: July 3, 2026 at 3:24 pm By Dan Peterson
A new article went up today at Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship 69 (2026): 129-182. It was written by C. Thomas Black, and its title is “Entry to the Temple Is through the Principles of the Beatitudes”: Abstract: The significance of the Beatitudes, particularly their relationship to the remainder of the Sermon on the Mount, has long been debated. “The Physicality of the Small Plates”
Last updated on: July 2, 2026 at 3:26 pm By Dan Peterson
Newly posted on the Interpreter Foundation’s webpage: The Interpreter Insights Podcast — July 2, 2026: “The Physicality of the Small Plates in the Book of Mormon,” with Terry Hutchinson and John Gee Professor Gee’s discussion of the Small Plates of Nephi from the Book of Mormon reminds me of an article by Richard Lyman Bushman, “What Are We to Make of the Gold Plates?” that he published in BYU Studies 64/1 (2025): 97-113. The whole article is well worth... Read more
