Is the Interpreter Foundation on its last legs? 2022-10-28T13:39:40-06:00 Dan Peterson

The Interpreter Foundation continues to sputter along, barely alive, desperate and full of venom. Or, anyhow, so say some of its critics. Here are the items that have appeared on its website during the past three days or so:
A new article has appeared in Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Faith and Scholarship:under the title “A Research Note: Continuing Exploration and Research in Oman.” It was written by Warren P. Aston:
Abstract: The significance of the ongoing studies into the potential location of the Old World “Bountiful,” which Nephi reminds us was “prepared of the Lord” (1 Nephi 17:5), and is documented in great detail by him, can hardly be overstated. Bountiful’s resources had to be truly substantial and unique to enable the Lehites to recover from years of land travel from Jerusalem and to build a ship capable of reaching the New World. Exploration and scientific studies of the Dhofar region of southern Oman, the only section of the Arabian coast containing the feature Nephi describes, continue to the present. Here I briefly discuss, chronologically, recent developments of special significance to Book of Mormon studies.
“Royal Skousen Presentation on the Current Status of the Book of Mormon Critical Text Project”
Royal Skousen will be doing a presentation on the current status of the Book of Mormon critical text project at Utah Valley University [UVU] on Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 7 to 9 p.m. The location is the Sorenson Center Center Stage. The entire campus is open for parking except the parking garage, which costs $1 an hour.
Conference Talks: “Ancient Temple Imagery in the Sermons of Jacob,” by David E. Bokovoy
This essay makes a compelling argument for Jacob, the brother of Nephi, having deep knowledge of ancient Israelite temple ritual, concepts, and imagery, based on two of Jacob’s sermons in 2 Nephi 9 and Jacob 1-3. For instance, he discusses the duty of the priest to expiate sin and make atonement before the Lord and of entering God’s presence. Jacob quotes temple-related verses from the Old Testament, like Psalm 95. The allusions to the temple are not forced, but very subtle. Of course, Jacob’s central topic, the atonement, is a temple topic itself, and its opposite, impurity, is also expressed by Jacob in terms familiar and central to an ancient temple priest. The temple is also shown as a gate to heaven.
Interpreter Radio Show — October 2, 2022
The topic of the first hour of the 2 October 2022 episode of the Interpreter Radio Show — which, by the way, featured Neal Rappleye, Jasmin Rappleye, Stephen O. Smoot, and Hales Swift — was devoted to a review of the October 2022 semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By contrast, the second portion of the show was dedicated to a roundtable discussion of the upcoming “Come, Follow Me” lesson #46 (Hosea 1–6; 10–14; Joel). Since then, an archived recording of the entire 2 October episode has been prepared for your edification and delight, albeit without the cutting edge news announcements from nearly a month ago and without product endorsements and other commercial exhortations. And here’s some additional good news: Every Sunday evening, the Interpreter Radio Show can be heard live and unrehearsed between 7 PM and 9 PM (MDT), on K-TALK, AM 1640. If, though, for some reason, listening to it on the radio doesn’t float your boat, you can still access it as it transpires live on the Internet at ktalkmedia.com.
Interpreter Radio Show — October 9, 2022
Terry Hutchinson, John Gee, and Kevin Christensen spent the first half of the 9 October 2022 iteration of the Interpreter Radio Show discussing a new book that has recently been produced by the Interpreter Foundation, entitled Dictionary of Proper Names and Foreign Words in the Book of Mormon. During the second portion of the show, they joined in a roundtable discussing the upcoming “Come, Follow Me” lesson #47 (Amos; Obadiah). And now an archived recording of the 9 October 2022 program is available to you at your convenience and at no charge — though deprived of outdated news announcements and sadly bereft of extraneous attempts to sell you stuff. If solar flares have not made radio transmissions impossible and if you live in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, the Interpreter Radio Show can be heard live on Sunday evenings from 7 to 9 PM (MDT), on K-TALK, AM 1640. If you live outside of the Salt Lake Valley, you can listen live on the Internet at ktalkmedia.com.
Interpreter Radio Show — October 16, 2022
In the first half of this, the 16 October 2022 episode of the Interpreter Radio Show, Bruce Webster, Kris Frederickson, and Martin Tanner discussed ways we can retain the youth of the Church. The second portion of the two-hour show was devoted to a roundtable discussion of the upcoming “Come, Follow Me” lesson #48 (Jonah; Micah). But perhaps you missed it? Never mind! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! The entire two-how program has now been archived and made freely accessible to you in a version from which all pesky commercial interruptions and all outdated news announcements have been surgically removed. The Interpreter Radio Show also can be heard live on Sunday evenings from 7 to 9 PM (MDT), on K-TALK, AM 1640. If, though, for some reason your radio signal has been jammed, you can listen live on the Internet at ktalkmedia.com.
Interpreter Radio Show — October 23, 2022
In the first hour of the 23 October 2022 installment of the Interpreter Radio Show, Martin Tanner discussed the upcoming Come Follow Me lesson #49 (Nahum; Habakkuk; Zephaniah). In the second hour, he focused on the evidence supporting barley, bees, horses, and elephants in The Book of Mormon. The entire show has now been archived, purified of extraneous commercial and other messages, and made available for your delectation. The Interpreter Radio Show can be heard live each and every Sunday evening of the year from 7 to 9 PM (MDT), on K-TALK, AM 1640, or you can listen live on the Internet at ktalkmedia.com.
And please don’t forget about the 2022 Temple on Mount Zion Conference that’s coming up very shortly, on 4-5 November.
