NASA Chicxulub painting

This painting, by Donald E. Davis, depicts the Chicxulub asteroid slamming into tropical, shallow seas of the sulfur-rich Yucatan Peninsula in what is today southeast Mexico. The aftermath of this immense asteroid collision, which occurred approximately 65-66 million years ago, is believed by some (though, I’m told, not by young-earth creationist me) to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species on Earth. The impact spewed hundreds of billions of tons of sulfur into the atmosphere, producing a worldwide blackout as well as freezing temperatures that persisted for at least a decade. Shown in this painting are pterodactyls, flying reptiles with wingspans of up to 50 feet, gliding above low tropical clouds.   (A public domain image from NASA)

You may perhaps have heard that a disease called coronavirus is going around.  Here are some comments on different aspects of the illness and the responses to it, from various sources:

“On Coronavirus, Where Are All the Grownups?”

“President Trump Needs to Step Up on the Coronavirus”

“Rick Scott’s Moment”

“Helpless in Seattle: How journalists are/are not covering coronavirus, churches and conferences”

“6 key coronavirus numbers you should know: COVID-19 cases and deaths are going up around the world”

“As the coronavirus outbreak evolves, we answer some key questions: In this rapidly changing public health emergency, many unknowns remain”

“If coronavirus spreads within the US, here’s how daily life might change”

“Why a coronavirus quarantine in the US is a bad idea: Broad, sweeping restrictions could do more harm than good”

Here’s some good advice from Dr. Jeff Lindsay, who isn’t a physician or health worker but whose long residency in China and doctorate in chemical engineering do give him an interesting vantage point from which to comment:

“Skip Church if You Are Ill and Other Tips for Coping with COVID-19 and the Corona Virus (SARS-CoV-2)”

From the administration at Brigham Young University:

“Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates”

“Repurposed drugs may help scientists fight the new coronavirus: Work on similar viruses is giving researchers clues to develop drugs against the disease”

“Reasons for Coronavirus Optimism”

“People ‘shed’ high levels of coronavirus, study finds, but most are likely not infectious after recovery begins”

“Apple says it’s fine to wipe your iPhone with a Clorox wipe”

But not everything is gloomy and discouraging.  Here, for example, are a couple of really cheery, upbeat items:

“Giant asteroid apocalypse 13K years ago was witnessed by ancient humans, experts believe”

“Earth’s Oldest Asteroid Impact Found in Australia: The cataclysm, which occurred roughly 2.2 billion years ago, might have catapulted the planet out of an ice age.”

“Earth’s oldest asteroid strike linked to ‘big thaw'”

“Asteroid’s Chance of Earth Impact in 2027 Now 96%”

“New chlamydia species discovered deep under the Arctic Ocean”

“Once the Amazon rainforest passes the point of no return it could be gone in decades”
