For those who like to keep adding to their files, here are two new items.
First, for the already bulging “Utah is a provincial backwater and a Mormon-riddled hell on earth” file, there is this from a while back, brought to my attention just recently:
“The fastest growing (and shrinking) states: A closer look”
Second, for the richly furnished “Brigham Young University is an academic joke and an international laughing stock” file:

If you can muster just under thirty-seven minutes (either at one time or in incremental installments), I think you’ll find the October 2018 World Report of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of real interest. I surely did:
***
I can’t express how delighted I am to see such conversations still going on:
“Church and NAACP Leaders Meet in Salt Lake City: Joint education and employment efforts continue”
***
It’s essential that we get the history right, and that we be completely honest about it. The Church can withstand the truth, because its claims are true. We needn’t fear historical investigation. And those who build their testimonies upon a denial of true history may well eventually find themselves or their children in serious difficulty, as pertains to their faith:
“Yes, Joseph Smith Really Did Use a Seer Stone in the Translation of the Book of Mormon”
***
Did everybody see this? The Church opposes Utah Proposition 2, but it does not oppose the medical use of marijuana:
“Mormon church backs deal to allow medical marijuana in Utah”
***
You might find this helpful:
“Is There Evidence for Book of Mormon Highways in Ancient America?”
***
We recognize what is lovely because we have seen it somewhere else, and as we walk through the world, we are constantly on the watch for it with a kind of nostalgia, so that when we see an object or a person that pleases us, it is like recognizing an old friend; it hits us in the solar plexus, and we need no measuring or lecturing to tell us that it is indeed quite perfect. It is something we have long been looking for, something we have seen in another world, memories of how things should be. (Hugh Nibley, “Goods of First and Second Intent,” Collected Works of Hugh Nibley 9:528)
