Over at Tricycle<\/em>\u2018s blog<\/a>, the mighty Buddhist-feminist scholar Dr. Rita Gross has what I believe the kids call an epic takedown<\/em> of the latest Patheos Public Square on \u201cExpanding Leadership Opportunities for Buddhist Women\u201d<\/a>. Do give the whole piece a read.\u00a0Specifically, Dr. Gross calls out the framing of the discussion in terms of the \u201crisks and benefits\u201d of opening leadership up further to Buddhist women (what risks?), as well as the fact that the panel was made up of seven men (and no women at all \u2014 in a conversation about<\/em> women, no less).<\/p>\n

Dr. Gross absolves the authors, who she presumes were not aware that no women authors would be included. I also presume this is correct\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it was certainly true for me. I had been invited to participate in the Public Square, but was unable to complete anything on time due to my participation this month in both the Eco-Dharma Conference & Retreat<\/a> and the Aldo Leopold Foundation\u2019s most recent Land Ethic Leader training program<\/a>. I also, some months ago,\u00a0voiced support for Buddhist women\u00a0as the focus when the subject of a Buddhist Public Square was raised, and made suggestions\u00a0for\u00a0authors (all women if I remember them\u00a0correctly) when asked.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m glad now not to have added to the male dominance of the panel by bringing the number of male voices to eight. A Patheos editor commented<\/a> in Dr. Gross\u2019 post that potential women authors, including Dr. Gross herself<\/del>, had been contacted about participating ahead of time but \u201ceither didn\u2019t respond or declined to participate.\u201d (Dr. Gross was in the \u201cdidn\u2019t respond\u201d column, apparently.)<\/del>\u00a0[NOTE<\/strong>: The same editor claims Dr. Gross was contacted beforehand and didn\u2019t respond; Dr. Gross counters that she was not contacted until after the Public Square debuted. You can see the exchange in the comments of Dr. Gross\u2019 post.]<\/em> (Knowing how long our editors work in advance to put these Public Squares together, I can understand their wanting to work with what they had (seven contributions, all from men) and not call the whole thing a wash. However, especially given the subject under discussion, I would agree that it was at the very least ill-advised to proceed with the all-male panel; it should have been put on hold if no women contributors\u00a0could be found by launch day. (When I first saw the Public Square\u2019s front page, this\u00a0Onion<\/em> headline<\/a> immediately came to mind.)<\/p>\n

That said, having received such direct\u00a0feedback from\u00a0someone I know we all respect, I\u2019m confident Patheos contributors and editors alike will now work that much harder going forward to not reinforce (even unintentionally)\u00a0the very thing we<\/a> were<\/a> all<\/a> concerned<\/a> enough<\/a> about<\/a> to want to\u00a0make it a special focus of our work: the scourge of Buddhist patriarchy.
