When Vonetta Flowers competed for a spot in the 2000 Summer Olympics, she never imagined the long and winding road she would travel to achieve her goals.
Plagued with knee and ankle injuries, Flowers didn’t make the finals in the track division. Then her husband heard about bobsledders looking for sprinters to train for the Winter Games because they needed people with certain athletic skills who could give a running push to the bobsled to start the race.
Though she tried out only half-seriously, Flowers showed potential, and was invited to train with the team. Being both fast and strong, she proved to be a valuable asset.
In the first-ever women’s bobsled competition in the Olympics, Vonetta Flowers became the first African-American to win a gold medal at a Winter Games.
Adaptation and change can be both scary and painful. But they can also lead to the fulfillment of dreams. Pray for the wisdom to see where God is leading you.
[Make] your ear attentive to wisdom and [incline] your heart to understanding…cry out for insight, and raise your voice for understanding…then you will…find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5)
Enable me, Spirit of Wisdom, to find You.
