Memorial Day 2016

Last updated on: June 2, 2016 at 8:21 pm   By Dave Griffey

There are many things I could have posted on, or pictures I could have posted.  But on the whole, the best picture we had was this: As I said, if we can’t get to visit my Dad, we’ll go to a local cemetery and visit the graves of veterans.  We try to pick out of the way markers, on the theory that they might get fewer visitors.  Seeing the boys take an interest in reading the markings and writings and... Read more

And yet another great reflection on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings

Last updated on: June 2, 2016 at 8:00 pm   By Dave Griffey

Over at the always interesting Sardonic Ex Curia, we have a reasoned discussion on this tough topic.  He takes the case for and against the use of the bombs by examining the arguments of Fr. William Miscamble and G.E.M. Anscombe. As usual, it’s a fair and insightful piece and worth at least a read or two.  The treatment is balanced, and he brings up a great point, that the more credible case against the bombs ultimately leans on the action... Read more

Another thought about Hiroshima

Last updated on: June 2, 2016 at 10:45 am   By Dave Griffey

And President Obama’s speech.  The always interesting TMLutas weighs in and reminds us about the political backdrop of Japan in 1945, and what we know of its tendency to off any statesmen who might have wanted to talk peace.  There are other cultures out there that do the same, by the way.  I think it’s TM’s point that President Obama missed a chance to make the disasters of 1945 more relevant to today.   Read more

Social Media and the Catholic Pitchfork Brigade

Last updated on: June 2, 2016 at 9:12 am   By Dave Griffey

OK, so it’s this.  Without getting into the nuts and bolts, it’s come to my attention that a young woman who is running for the position of circuit judge in Wayne County, Michigan, is under assault.  Who is assaulting her you might ask?  Could it be the press?  Could it be terrorists?  Could it be sexist men who are ticked at a young woman advancing through the judicial corridors? No!  She’s being attacked by Simcha Fisher and the world of... Read more

Condemning the Hiroshima Bombing

Last updated on: June 1, 2016 at 6:30 am   By Dave Griffey

And the Nagasaki bombing.  From another POV.  Scott Eric Alt publishes a condemnation of not only the decision to use the bombs, but of those Americans and Catholics who disagree.  OK, from the top.  As I’ve said before, some of the arguments Mr. Alt uses are no longer seen as credible, at least to some.  As for the oft referenced MacArthur/Eisenhower quotes, see here. Of course if you are a Catholic, you are at a disadvantage argument-wise, since the Church’s... Read more

I’m fine with this

Pope Francis has honored George Clooney according to CBS.  That doesn’t mean Pope Francis is giving the official papal seal of approval to anything and everything that Mr. Clonney stands for.  I’m reminded of an old picture of the pope greeting a younger Frank Sinatra.  Can’t remember which pope it was, but I’m pretty sure the pope in question wasn’t suggesting that Sinatra was being given full endorsement of everything going on in his life. I bear Mr. Clooney a little... Read more

This is called the media making a controversy where there is none

Last updated on: June 1, 2016 at 4:00 am   By Dave Griffey

I realize that across Social Media, there are many people who act as if they are more than happy to risk the life of a child in order to save a gorilla.  It’s the logical ramification of where the last couple generations of American education would bring us.  Like my sons learned in 4th Grade Science class, humans are the only animals whose extinction would benefit the planet.  Told again and again over endless weeks and years, that has to have... Read more

Another take on the Transgender issue

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 1:52 pm   By Dave Griffey

This from a woman who doesn’t appear to be altogether religious, but does appear to be a woman struggling with the new untruth we are called to accept.  If you can get past the whole ‘return to patriarchy’ message, which might be out of the park extreme, as well as the fact that she has some harsh ideas about an Islamic Europe, her bigger point that a society told to reject fact and truth in favor of feelings and not offending... Read more
