Thank you

Not just thanks to those who fought and died that day, but for those who fought and died in all wars for the freedom and liberty we are so ready to discard. My apologies, and my gratitude. Read more

So veterans are not stupid after all
Last updated on: June 6, 2016 at 7:00 am By Dave Griffey
You never know what you’ll find out. It turns out that veterans, including the head of the VFW, were none too happy about President Obama’s suggestion that they are merely duped by conservative media, which accounts for their inexplicable failure to fall in lockstep behind him and his policies. I realize that the old ‘conservatives are dumb, liberals are awesomely smart’ meme is a handy way of giving yourself and edge in an argument. It works in a sympathetic culture... Read more

Muhammad Ali has died
Last updated on: June 4, 2016 at 8:22 am By Dave Griffey
Truth be told, I knew little about him. He was, as I explained to my boys, counter-Tebow. That is, he was a phenomenon who rose above the venue in which he performed. That he was a great and talented boxer can’t be denied. He also represented that growing movement that was not just content to call out America’s sins, but was going to define America by its sins. Which, by my lights, is why we are seeing the erosion of... Read more

Taking gun violence seriously
Last updated on: June 4, 2016 at 8:02 am By Dave Griffey
Or not. Mark is part of that movement that seems to have no particular interest in solving the question of violence in America. That isn’t always the case. There are fair minded people who acknowledge the role that mental health, our cultural breakdown, our current attitudes and even educational philosophy might have in violence who are willing to call for examining gun violence. They will propose certain ideas that are worth listening to. Likewise, I am at times bothered that... Read more

An interesting question about the Atomic Bombs and the biblical Flood narrative
Last updated on: June 4, 2016 at 5:00 am By Dave Griffey
From reader Nate Winchester. Basically, if nuking a city is so bad, what about God essentially ‘nuking’ the human race except for one family back in the days of Noah? If nuking innocent civilians is intrinsically evil, wouldn’t flooding away civilians – some of which, children at least, had to be innocent – also be intrinsically evil? I admit, I’m probably not qualified to answer this, at least from a Catholic point of view. I would say the first... Read more

We’re all about that race
Last updated on: June 3, 2016 at 12:21 pm By Dave Griffey
Gorillas as understood today ‘Bout that race. In case you were worried about how long it would take to make the sad story about the gorilla shot at the Cincinnati Zoo into a racial crisis, worry no more! It turns out all of the scrutiny aimed at the parents is – you guessed it – because they’re Black! Now, for the record, it’s worth looking at this and the other cases of children and zoo animals that keep being referenced. Especially... Read more

I though it might be nice to sit back and enjoy this for a change of pace: If that doesn’t calm you down, I don’t know what will. Music, they say, is the language of the angels. And nature, if not able to be enjoyed in its actual setting, still has a way of reminding us that God can do amazing things, even with us Internet bloggers. Though nature is always easier to enjoy without the constant pop-up ads. Read more
