It’s amazing what you learn on the Internet
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 9:09 am By Dave Griffey
There is such a thing as Nwes. Apparently some British firm. How do I know this? Because when I type ‘News’ to search the latest, my fingers get the better of me and I type a variety of combinations, including Nwes. And guess what? I was right, there is a Nwes after all! We live in such a glorious age. Read more

I promise I will not ban you
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 9:44 am By Dave Griffey
After my first week on Patheos, I thought it was worth putting this out on the table. I won’t ban or threaten to ban anyone who comes by, and I won’t pre-moderate comments. Just avoid two important internet tendencies. First, it goes without saying that actual, physical threats will not be tolerated. That’s a no-second-chance violation. The other is personal attack and accusation. No name calling. No slander or calumny. And no insulting my intelligence by saying it’s not wrong... Read more

Happy birthday Olivia de Havilland
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 8:57 pm By Dave Griffey
With all of the sad and tragic and scandalous news that has dominated the cycle for the last couple weeks, I missed an important birthday. Olivia de Havilland, the last surviving high profile actress from Hollywood’s “Golden Age”, celebrated her 100th birthday on July 1st. By all accounts, she was in real life the characters she played: Kind, caring, and a sincere desire to do the right thing. I’m sure she’s human like all of us. But she hearkens back to... Read more

I love it when Ohio makes international news

Even if it is about the selling of our very own Longeaberger Basket headquarters building. Yes, it’s a large building shaped like a basket. It might make me a traitor to my fellow buckeyes, but I always found the thing to be a bit gaudy. Perhaps because I only bought one Longaberger basket in my life. Actually my wife bought it. She was invited to a ‘Longaberger party’ at a church I was pastoring in the mid 90s. Not wanting to... Read more

Prayers for Turkey
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 6:09 pm By Dave Griffey
In news that might or might not be related to anything else going on in the region, there appears to be a military coup happening in Turkey. No news, details, or clear understanding of what’s going on. It’s enough to remind us that we’re not in the fourth quarter of human history, with two minutes left and all we need to do is slap America into shape and then everyone in the world will live happy. We’re just passing through.... Read more

No posts today, just prayers
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 5:58 am By Dave Griffey
Apart from the earlier post, I won’t be posting today. If Donald Trump can do the right thing and set aside celebrations of his VP pick out of respect for the horrific attack and its victims, I can hold off from blogging for a day. I would say prayers are in order. Pray for the victims of course. Pray for their loved ones, those they leave behind, and all of us as we work to know how to react. But... Read more

An interesting piece from the Huffington Post
Last updated on: July 15, 2016 at 5:40 am By Dave Griffey
Yep. President Obama has tried to pour a ton of manure on our problems in the hopes that something beautiful will grow. It won’t. Calling Nazi styled regimes of evil ‘junior varsity’ doesn’t turn them into junior varsity. Saying we’re not as divided as we think when everyone can see the divisions unraveling doesn’t change the truth. Insisting that our economy is doing swell because Wall Street, even as wages stagnate and the workforce shrinks doesn’t change America’s feeling that we’re... Read more

Terror in Nice
Last updated on: July 14, 2016 at 7:29 pm By Dave Griffey
Details are still fuzzy. All we know is that many are dead, perhaps as many as sixty. Apparently during a Bastille Day celebration. May God embrace those who died and give strength and peace to those left behind. Let us never jump to conclusions or judge wrongly. But give us the forbearance to do what we can to protect the innocent, the helpless, the weak. May God be with us all before dark times turn to light. Read more

Black lives matter too
Last updated on: July 14, 2016 at 9:15 am By Dave Griffey
Yes they do. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Somewhere, however, kids who sing that song have it one up on us educated adults in America today. I get what the movement is about. Problems in the justice system, disproportionate singling out of blacks by police officers, the history of blacks in America, are issues worth addressing. Thus the rise of the slogan Black Lives Matter which, if I remember correctly, was coined during the Zimmerman kerfuffle in 2012... Read more
