John McCain diagnosed with a brain tumor

Last updated on: July 19, 2017 at 10:09 pm   By Dave Griffey

Prayers for him and his loved ones during such a difficult time.  I’ve scarcely known a time when McCain wasn’t a presence in Washington politics.  He has endured much, served much, and agree or disagree with his positions, dedicated his life to public service. God bless him during this time, give his caretakers the wisdom and insight to ease his struggle with this condition, and give him strength and one more dose of the courage he has leaned upon so many... Read more

Catholics behind global warming will own this

Last updated on: July 18, 2017 at 7:56 am   By Dave Griffey

Right now, I don’t know if reducing the surplus population is a consensus solution among climate scientists.  Consensus is important of course.  That’s what makes things true. But if it becomes the consensus among scientists that we must stop having as many kids and reduce the human population, then where will Catholics be?  Especially those who cite consensus as a reason for accepting man made global warming in the first place.  I’m just curious. Read more

Dunkirk might be worth the watch

Last updated on: July 17, 2017 at 8:27 pm   By Dave Griffey

It is a movie based on one of the great feats of heroism and sacrifice in a war filled to the brim with such things.  Nolan is no slack as a movie maker.  The Prestige is one of the more underrated films of the last decade or so, IMHO. Nolan brings a realism and grittiness to what he does.  This little chapter in history could use his touch.  Not sure if I’ll see it in theaters or not, but I think... Read more

If I tried to rob a liquor store at gunpoint

Last updated on: July 18, 2017 at 6:01 am   By Dave Griffey

And it turned out there was no cash on the premises, so I went away – does that mean I didn’t do anything wrong? Come now.  I’d say I probably deserved to be condemned, if not charged with a couple violations.  And yet, unless I’m mistaken, that is exactly the excuse Donald Trump’s son is using for his infamous meeting.  And it’s the reason some in the GOP are actually defending him. Yes, he went to meet with a citizen of... Read more

What Jesus never said

Last updated on: July 17, 2017 at 7:57 am   By Dave Griffey

“I will be hated by everyone because of those Christians over there.” What He said was: “You will be hated by all on account of My name.” I’ve noticed a trend of late.  Well, not of late.  It’s always a temptation to look at other believers and assume they’re the problem with the Church.  I just notice it’s becoming popular for some to constantly bemoan how ‘those others’ are messing with all the love Jesus should be getting. This isn’t to say... Read more

Meanwhile in less important news

Last updated on: July 15, 2017 at 8:04 am   By Dave Griffey

We’re not hearing about this as much as we should.  A famine sweeping several nations of Africa, putting the lives of millions at risk.  Around 20 million people are on the verge of starvation.  Where is Live Aid when you need it? It’s not impossible to cover.  There was round the clock coverage back in the We Are the World days of the Ethiopian famine.  I was just shocked to see how widespread the famine is, and how little I’ve heard... Read more

Another good day for religious liberty

Last updated on: July 15, 2017 at 7:50 am   By Dave Griffey

Despite the hysterics, the actual courts seem to have fallen on the side of religious liberty more often than not.  We hear constant outcries that religious freedom is two steps from extinction.  I can’t help but notice, however, that the courts are preserving religious liberty in many of the high profile cases. Here is an example.  It almost looks like the courts are walking that balance that liberalism was all about back in the day.  They’re accepting the progressive interpretation... Read more

Why I don’t do Game of Thrones

Last updated on: July 13, 2017 at 7:02 pm   By Dave Griffey

In a nutshell.  It proved that if you just slap gratuitous violence and lots of sex on something, it will be popular.  Most of the HBO series are simply old ideas repackaged with the above additions to one extent or another. I once read something to the effect that George R. R. Martin was a Conscientious Objector during Vietnam who never saw combat, who wrote a series filled with soft core torture porn and lowest denominators and base entertainment.  J.R.R.... Read more
