Donald Trump will be our 45th president
Last updated on: December 20, 2016 at 9:05 am By Dave Griffey
Or 44th if you don’t count Grover Cleveland as two people. It’s official. Barring the unexpected, Donald J. Trump will be our next president. Now it is in his court. Michael Goodwin breaks down the expectations, how we got here, the good, the bad, and the stupid. With that said, he’s my president, and I’ll support him insofar as he is doing what is good, and not doing what is wrong. I won’t spend the next four years jumping up... Read more

Terrible
Last updated on: December 19, 2016 at 7:12 pm By Dave Griffey
At least nine are killed in another terrorist assault. This time at a Christmas market in Germany. Meanwhile, a gunman has opened fire in a Mosque in Zurich. And the Russian ambassador to Turkey has been assassinated. All in a single day. Of course there are other violent crimes. In our part of the world, we had our obligatory shooting on the local morning news. And there will be others. We pray for peace on earth, not because we believe... Read more

The last Sunday of Advent is behind us
Last updated on: December 19, 2016 at 9:42 am By Dave Griffey
That means Christmastime is almost here! I’ve taken on a self-imposed hiatus from focusing on Christmas during Advent. Contrary to the liturgical calendar of Sts. Macy and Woolworth, Advent is not supposed to be the time of parties and celebration. That comes at Christmas. Not before. So rather than slipping into the temptation to act like Christmas is here and will be gone on the 26th, I exercised restraint. No particular focus on Christmas this year. It wasn’t easy. But... Pandering to angry black men
Last updated on: December 19, 2016 at 9:29 am By Dave Griffey
Oh, I’m sorry. That sounds too racist. Let’s try that again. Pandering to angry white men. That’s better. Remember, it’s not wrong to judge based on nationality, religion or skin color. In fact it can get you honorary awards, invitations to speak, op-eds and invited to all the best parties. It’s only wrong if you do it to the wrong ones. That’s what makes us different from all the previous eras that condescendingly judged people based on nationality, religion or skin... Read more

Not always Trump
Last updated on: December 19, 2016 at 9:19 am By Dave Griffey
Jonah Goldberg explains. There are many reasons for cheering because the Left got a bloody nose this year. After all, as I have argued incessantly, most of what the Left screamed at Trump for doing and saying has been done and said by different people on the Left for decades. At least in some manner or another. Nonetheless, this does not take away the concerns about Trump. It does not take away from the fact that much of what Trump does... Read more

One of the biggest threats to the future of diversity
Last updated on: December 19, 2016 at 8:31 am By Dave Griffey
Is an educational system encouraging students to achieve diversity with whatever means possible. We’ve already seen students who react badly, even violently, when their own opinions and viewpoints aren’t affirmed. Now we’re seeing a growing tendency to approach the issue of diversity in a way that would make Captain Beatty proud. Read more

RIP Henry Heimlich
Last updated on: December 17, 2016 at 4:35 pm By Dave Griffey
Henry Heimlich has died. The inventor of the Heimlich maneuver, I can’t guess how many lives he saved. My Mom, who worked in a nursing home when I was younger, saved a man from chocking a day after they were taught the method. To die is always a bit sad, and yet to think of the good that came from his having lived? A life well lived I’d say. Well done Mr. Heimlich, and thank you. Eternal rest grant unto... Read more
