A reflection on the Holy Innocents

Last updated on: December 29, 2016 at 8:19 am   By Dave Griffey

Courtesy of the Sick Pilgrim.  It’s worth your time to visit Karl Persson’s site.  A reminder that Christmas does not come from a store, but means much, more.  And the otherworldly aspect is not an afterthought, but is the point. Read more

Not your Hallmark Christmas story

Last updated on: December 28, 2016 at 12:09 pm   By Dave Griffey

Today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents.  It commemorates this little neglected part of the Christmas narrative: “Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by... Read more

The Feast of St. Stephen

Last updated on: December 26, 2016 at 11:06 am   By Dave Griffey

The first deacon and Christian martyr at this time of explosive martyrdom throughout the world.  Even as they suffer and die, however, persecuted Christians stop to rejoice in the promise of Christmas.  A humbling witness. On the other hand, story after story of Muslims who are converting to Christianity in droves.  Such is the way of things.  A time to rejoice for sure. God’s peace on earth and goodwill toward all men this Christmastide. Read more

Do not be happy this Christmas

Last updated on: December 24, 2016 at 10:24 pm   By Dave Griffey

Be Transformed And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Merry and a blessed Christmas on the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Read more

Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year

Last updated on: December 24, 2016 at 12:05 pm   By Dave Griffey

I’d like to thank everyone who comes by my blog and those who enrich it with your insights.  We might not always agree, but not a day goes by that I don’t take something from it. I’ll be scarce for the rest of the year, so blogging will be light at best.  Vacation coming around.  The festival of peace and salvation is at hand!  My family was able to swing an entire week off together, so we’ll be hanging close,... Read more

America’s Christmas Carol

Last updated on: December 23, 2016 at 11:59 pm   By Dave Griffey

Deacon Steven Greydanus pens a delightful review of one of the greatest films of all time.  Certainly one of the greatest holiday films.  The only thing that makes the movie better is that Jimmy Stewart was, in real life, even more heroic and respectable than George Bailey.  And knowing Bailey from a Christian perspective, that’s saying something. Read more

A Ronald Reagan Christmas post

Last updated on: December 24, 2016 at 12:45 am   By Dave Griffey

My boys saw this and wondered if it was from some other planet.  I explained we were still in fear of Reagan at that point.  He hadn’t nuked the world yet, but we were pretty sure that was his intention. He did survive an assassination attempt, and some critics begrudgingly admitted he had some grit.  But on the whole, Tip had sworn everlasting opposition, and we were holding our breath.  After all, by that time, detente had come to mean... Read more

My own little contribution to the War on Christmas

Last updated on: December 23, 2016 at 4:53 pm   By Dave Griffey

When I’m out and about at this time of year, I wait to hear how others greet me.  If they say Happy Holidays, I say Happy Holidays back.  If they say Merry Christmas, I say Merry Christmas back. If they don’t say anything, I’ll default to Happy Holidays.  Sometimes I’ll say Season’s Greetings to see if they’re paying attention.  If it’s a smaller establishment, and I see mangers and Bible Versus and ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ signs, I’ll go out... Read more
