Dwight Longenecker and Bernie Sanders

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 2:03 pm   By Dave Griffey

Again, a Catholic can, in good faith, vote for Sanders.  If the GOP put Adolf Hitler up for nomination, then clearly Sanders would be the lesser of the two evils.  Depending on how much faith you have in Donald Trump’s word, it could be argued that Sanders would be better than Trump, too.  Again, depending on how much stock you put in Trump’s integrity and honesty about where he stands on life issues versus where he stood only a few... Read more

Voting Catholic

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 11:08 am   By Dave Griffey

The American Catholic has a poignant piece about the whole voting post from a couple days ago.  Again, the Bishops make it clear: You must allow your conscience and your voting to be informed by Catholic teaching.  You cannot vote for a candidate in order to advance an intrinsic evil (duh).  You cannot support a candidate who is about advancing intrinsic evils simply because you don’t like the other guy, or you only support women, or you’re a party faithful, or whatever. ... Read more

Duh

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 10:56 am   By Dave Griffey

If women can serve in every capacity in the military, then obviously the should have to register for the draft.  Personally, I don’t think they should be in every position in the military.  I still cling to old notions that the military should not be a laboratory for liberal experimentation.  And I also still think that women and men having different roles in a society does not mean evil and sexism and all that jazz.  But if you want women... Read more

An interesting thought on women and voting and abortion

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 10:51 am   By Dave Griffey

From the old Zippy Catholic blog.  Would we have a better chance at making abortion illegal if women didn’t have the right to vote?  It sure makes you wonder.  I will say no more. Read more

Michael Flynn does Iowa

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 10:49 am   By Dave Griffey

And pretty much sums it up.  We are seeing Democracy in the age of MTV.  An age that has long thrown out quality and depth for the right hairdo and perfect figure.  We live in a time where the media insists that a world leader is unworthy unless he or she can be awesome on a late night comedy show.  It is in that context that we will get our next generation of leaders.  Read more

Mark Shea and the Catholic Left

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 10:26 am   By Dave Griffey

So a reader sent a link to Mark Shea’s Facebook page.  I swore bushy tail on that site, and to be honest, I’ve been the happier for it.  Nonetheless, he sent it to me and observed that this post explains a lot.  And indeed, it does: “Interesting. Dreyfuss is an old Lefty. But lots of old Lefties are people who, like Rachel Maddow, self-identify as people who would have been happy voting for Eisenhower. People who, like Dreyfuss, owe a... Read more

Poor fellow

Last updated on: February 3, 2016 at 5:30 am   By Dave Griffey

Jim Gilmore, who is actually running for president, received only 12 votes in Iowa.  That’s not 12%.  That’s 12 votes.  Assuming he had more than 12 people working statewide for his campaign, that means not all of his own workers voted for him. Ouch. I’m one of those people who hates to see a team get nothing.  Last year when OSU decimated Wisconsin, I felt bad that the Badgers didn’t at least get a field goal.  So seeing this, I can’t help but feel... Read more

Pope Francis talks China

Last updated on: February 2, 2016 at 3:31 pm   By Dave Griffey

And tells us not to worry about the emerging China.  I’m sure I don’t worry.  Not in the sense of ‘crawling into a corner and covering my eyes’ worry.  But I’m one who doesn’t believe that notions of equality, liberty, freedom and the sanctity of life came out of the Dying West by accident.  I therefore can’t help but wonder what the world will look like when the West no longer dominates, but another culture does.  Will that culture have... Read more

The American Elections

Last updated on: February 2, 2016 at 2:13 pm   By Dave Griffey

From a global point of view.  This presented by the always reliable and unbiased NBC.  Whatever this is worth, since I’m sure it’s a selection of hundreds of people interviewed or asked.  I’m always curious if other countries spend their time wondering what Americans think of their elections or political processes.  Read more
