I will wait and see
Last updated on: February 7, 2016 at 4:01 pm By Dave Griffey
At this point, where we have come to expect our leaders to go from one religious shrine to another, there might not be anything worth worrying about. The old boundaries between religious belief and practice are quickly melting away. Even if we downplay Islamic terrorism, we can’t ignore the results. Islam has managed to force the world into setting a growing list of distinctions aside and trying to embrace one global religious belief. Which would suit most modern liberals just... Read more

Newsweek throws red meat to the tribal faithful

And announces that it is Right Wing Extremists who are the real threat to Americans. Of course they are. America is the third largest population in the world with 318 million Americans. Of those, only .9% are Muslim. 31% are Conservative. That means 98,580,000 Americans identify as Conservative vs. 2,862,000 who identify as Muslim. Now, approximately 26.9% of Americans are under 20 years old, and about 9.1% are 70 years old or older. That’s about 36% who are outside of the... Read more

Happy Birthday Mr. Reagan
Last updated on: February 7, 2016 at 1:08 pm By Dave Griffey
Over at The American Catholic, for Reagan’s birthday, Donald McClarey has a nice piece reminding us about Ronald Reagan and what he brought to the American landscape in the 1980s. My parents were Reagan Democrats. That is, they were sick and tired of Jimmy Carter’s lackluster leadership and felt that he, as well as the Democrats, had embraced values and ideas that were incompatible with America’s ultimate well being. The rest of their families, as far as I know, remained... Read more

Last updated on: February 6, 2016 at 2:36 pm By Dave Griffey
There is some truth to that. I’m no economist, and I hesitate to wade too deeply into issues I’m not schooled in, or can’t at least intelligently observe. I can tell our economy isn’t doing well. I can also tell that the Free Market doesn’t seem to solve all the problems it’s supposed to solve. But socialism as the economic theory of Jesus also seems to overstate the case. Like most topics today with a college educated generation with access... Read more

There are no neutral religious beliefs
Last updated on: February 6, 2016 at 1:45 pm By Dave Griffey
Religion is a belief. There is no such thing as a zone of neutrality where we all just agree to disagree. There is no place where it is simply the one secular truth about religion and all the others are biased beliefs and the stuff of sectarian clashes. All views of religion are biased. They are all opinions and beliefs. And in almost every case, they have little desire to live and let live with other views, at least on some level.... Read more

Catholics can vote for Bernie Sanders
Last updated on: February 6, 2016 at 1:00 pm By Dave Griffey
Of course they can. Again, I’ve long said a Catholic can vote for Sanders, or Clinton, or Bush, or Romney, or Rubio, or Reagan, or Obama or anyone. If they are convinced in their mind and heart, which has been informed by Church teaching, that the candidate represents the greater good, or at least the lesser evil, they can vote for him or her. Pretty simple stuff. What makes it seem complicated is that many Catholic apologists and Internet voices that... Read more

The Pope and the Russian Patriarch will meet
Last updated on: February 6, 2016 at 11:04 am By Dave Griffey
The news is abuzz about this historic meeting, as it should be. But let’s not start picking out curtains any time soon. One of the strange tendencies we Christians have is perpetually seeing the best in things, no matter what the evidence. I don’t mean we shouldn’t hope. Of course we should hope. And I don’t mean we shouldn’t be glad about this first step. But let’s not go giddy . I’ve talked to enough Orthodox Christians now to realize... Read more

Over at Catholics for Bernie Sanders
Last updated on: February 5, 2016 at 4:40 pm By Dave Griffey
We’re reminded that one of the most radically culture of death, non-religious but spiritual, secular socialists in America is the candidate who is closest to Pope Francis. Truth be told, I don’t know if that is accurate or not. I can see that there is a groundswell of Catholic support for Sanders, and it appears to be gaining steam. Not that all Catholics who support Sanders support him on issues like religious freedom, abortion, assisted suicide, or the HHS mandate. ... Read more
