RIP Sir George Martin

Last updated on: March 9, 2016 at 10:12 am   By Dave Griffey

Who was the Fifth Beatle?  That was a debate for many decades.  Was it one of the Beatles’ road managers, such as Neil Aspinall?  Brian Epstein?  Some say Billy Preston.  After all, he was the only artist to share billing with the Beatles on one of their published records. But to me – and millions – there could be no question.  George Martin, the Beatles’ producer, was the Fifth Beatle.  It was Martin who made the Beatles sound so good.... Read more

Nice to see

The leftist neo-investiture controversy hits a snag.  The Left is just salivating with the desire to increase its presence in every area of our lives, including our faith lives.  We just can’t get rid of these pesky rights and freedoms soon enough. In some areas, it looks as though progress is being made.  Every now and then, however, there is a setback.  Good news for sure. Read more

Donald Trump: Two views

Last updated on: March 8, 2016 at 6:00 am   By Dave Griffey

Two different takes on Donald Trump by two writers I admire.  Here, Michael Flynn takes a bird’s eye view of the entire election phenomenon, and rightly sets Trump in context of the greater mess in which we find ourselves.  John C. Wright, on the other hand, appears to endorse Trump at least as a preferable choice to either Democratic candidate.  He seems to prefer Cruz, but would take Trump for all his foibles because of the greater threat of the... Read more

An American History Lesson

Last updated on: March 8, 2016 at 5:30 am   By Dave Griffey

You could spend your hours in worse pursuits than following the historical gems put up over at The American Catholic.  There are times – times, mind you – that I almost feel subversive visiting there.  That’s because thoughtful articles bringing up key moments in our history are often touched upon.  Take this one, which brought out of the dusty vaults of my memory a moment in history that was quite the talk when I was growing up, but I’ve not... Read more

A walk in the park

Last updated on: March 7, 2016 at 3:52 pm   By Dave Griffey

It’s not quite spring, but the feeling was in the air.  Enough that a run around town, lunch and ice cream, and then a jaunt through one of the local parks.  It’s supposed to be haunted, but since it’s not Halloween, the feeling isn’t quite there.  Still, trudging through the woods and just taking in the world God made with the boys is worth its weight.  Fun stuff! Read more

My Dad didn’t know what it is like to be poor

Last updated on: March 7, 2016 at 11:51 am   By Dave Griffey

They only think they know what it is to be poor… Because of the color of his skin.  That’s according to Bernie Sanders.  And many, of course, are debating this.  Could it be that a poor person with white skin color doesn’t really know what it is to be poor?  Could a person who starved to death in a box under an interstate overpass really not know what it is to starve to death in a box under an interstate... Read more

Donald Trump, Mark Shea and the Facebook Generation

Last updated on: March 7, 2016 at 7:59 am   By Dave Griffey

How we see own personal Trumps By that, I don’t mean Mark supports or likes Donald Trump. Quite the contrary.  Mark routinely takes on Trump and Trump’s supporters the way Mark does most things: in the same manner as Donald Trump.  In fact, that’s my point.  If you want to be brutally honest, you’ll admit that Mark Shea is simply a Catholic Internet version of Donald Trump.  If you visit Facebook or similar Social Media sites, you’ll see that Mark... Read more

RIP Nancy Reagan

Last updated on: March 6, 2016 at 5:17 pm   By Dave Griffey

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan has died.  I’d like to think she is now with her husband, her great love of this world.  She was an exception to the idea I was kicking around about the influence moderate to liberal First Ladies had on their supposedly conservative husbands.  She may have been more to the left, but her dogged devotion to Ronald never would have let her impose such ideas on him, especially if she felt they would harm him... Read more
