Speaking of Harry Potter

Last updated on: March 10, 2016 at 7:36 pm   By Dave Griffey

At the Imaginative Conservative, we have a reminder that Harry Potter is steeped in Christian imagery.  Of course it is.  So is Cool Hand Luke.  It’s the underlying messages and the prism through which the imagery is filtered that allows me to recommend it, but only with an asterisk.  Those who throw out all obvious filters of Rowling’s clearly European Liberal interpretive template forget that Jack Chick, Gene Robinson, and Rudolf Bultmann also communicated in ways steeped in Christian imagery.... Read more

Could The Remnant have a point about Fr. Longenecker?

Last updated on: March 10, 2016 at 1:09 pm   By Dave Griffey

As I said here, as long as people like Fr. Longenecker, Patrick Madrid, Simcha Fisher, Steven Greydanus, and other celebrities of the Internet Catholic Apologetics world continue to give high fives to Mark Shea, who in my opinion has become nothing other than a Catholic version of Jack Chick, they have no reason to launch salvos at arbitrarily chosen targets like The Remnant. As for the argument at hand, I’m not saying I agree with The Remnant or would always... Read more

Not to say Hitler was good

Last updated on: March 10, 2016 at 12:46 pm   By Dave Griffey

But he did do a few good things at first.  Remember when that statement marked the end of Marge Schott’s reputation?  If you don’t remember, allow me to post a little blast from the past.   Yeah, that was the end.  Das ende.  And it would be for just about anyone. Of course we’re all aghast that Trump, after disavowing the KKK more than once, stumbled when asked a third time if he did.  That proves he loves the KKK... Read more

Can Catholics support Trump?

Last updated on: March 10, 2016 at 7:44 am   By Dave Griffey

Obviously if John C. Wright says he could at least consider supporting Trump, I’ll think twice before assuming anyone who does so is just wanting to make love to Satan.   Nonetheless, personally I can’t see myself supporting Trump.  Then again, I can’t see myself supporting Sanders or Clinton either. But because of all the esteemed Catholics who have rushed out to declare how beautiful are the feet of those who choose Sanders, I thought another opinion about Trump from... Read more

If you watch the news media

Last updated on: March 10, 2016 at 7:33 am   By Dave Griffey

You might have missed this story.  Iran fired two missiles marked with “Israel must be wipe out!”   Of course, we know that this is just an unfortunate deviation from Iran’s otherwise awesomely enlightened intentions.  That’s why our deal with Iran was so wonderful, even the Pope gave it high-fives.  When you’re dealing with an inherently good nation filled with beautiful people and beneficent leaders, any deal is a good deal. And this?  Bah.  Just a fluke.  Probably doesn’t mean... Read more

Mocking victims of gun violence

Last updated on: March 9, 2016 at 5:07 pm   By Dave Griffey

When it serves the cause.  OK, I get it.  A staunch advocate for gun rights is shot by her 4 year old.  Let’s all have a laugh.  Over at Mark Shea’s Facebook Page they’re having a particularly good time yucking it up and popping champagne corks over her injuries.  Naturally.  What else would we expect from a fine, upstanding representative of the Catholic Church and his Facebook followers? We don’t know the details of the story, but it’s likely she was negligent.... Read more

Hans Küng and Infallibility

Last updated on: March 9, 2016 at 11:07 am   By Dave Griffey

Apparently, Hans Küng is beseeching Pope Francis to speak out and clarify Papal Infallibility.  That’s an issue that Küng has challenged for quite some time.  I’ve found in my ten years of being Catholic, that Papal Infallibility is one of those things everyone must agree on, but nobody seems to know how.  It’s worth noting that, from the POV of some Orthodox Christians I’ve gotten to know, this is a major – and I mean major – sticking point with... Read more

Paul McCartney on the loss of Sir George Martin

Last updated on: March 9, 2016 at 10:44 am   By Dave Griffey

Read it here.  Again, were it not for the three ring circus primaries, this would be – or should be – round  the clock news. Read more
