Dogmat

The Dogmat has seen a lot of neat and beautiful stuff over the last couple of weeks, amid everything else. Being doggy rather than catty, the Dogmat prefers to focus on the beautiful stuff.

How to Express Admiration: Scott Meyer explains (in cartoon form) how to express admiration for another; and specifically how to express admiration for Walt Disney because “he’s the closest thing we’ve ever had to a Bond movie villain.” After all, did build “an immense complex in the middle of a swamp, with tunnels and costumed henchmen….”

The Physics of Fireworks: A truly nifty explanation of how professional fireworks are made and how they work. Three barks from under the couch.

Codename Colossus: Buy yourself a limited-edition walking sci-fi tank toy, hand-made in Singapore, for only $5000. Too rich for the Dogmat’s blood, but it sure is pretty.

The Ten Books That Have Influenced Me Most: Julie Davis of “Happy Catholic” lists the ten books that have influenced her most, with commentary.

Is It Beautiful, or “Mean, odious, repulsive, and revolting”?: Tom McDonald interprets John Everett Millais’ painting “Christ in the House of His Parents”; and then quotes Charles Dicken’s absurd eruption of outrage. Three smirks.

Lois McMaster Bujold interview: What it says, an interview with one of the Dogmat’s favorite writers.

Memory and Sensation: Feeding the Imagination: John Herreid talks about the forming of “well-formed imaginations” and “attuning senses to the good”.
