Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Patheos is celebrating its fifth anniversary, which is more like its 35th anniversary in dog years.
I don’t recall when I first became aware that Patheos was a thing, but it was probably around the time the Anchoress moved her blog there. I didn’t read the Anchoress much then; she seemed to write mostly about political issues that bored me, but once in a while I’d follow an interesting link over to her blog.
And then, one after another, other blogs I’d been reading for years began to make the move. Mark Shea. Frank Weathers. Fr. Dwight Longenecker. Simcha Fisher.
And then, back in 2012 Julie Davis invited me to contribute to Happy Catholic’s Bookshelf, a new blog to be hosted at Patheos. She wasn’t moving her blog there, precisely; but she was posting her book reviews there as well as at her own blog, and invited a number of us to help her out. And that’s how I got my foot in the door, and began to get to know a bunch of neat folks. And that’s really the biggest effect Patheos has had on my life: the collection of Catholic bloggers the Elizabeth Scalia has gathered together has become a true community for me. Not the only Christian community I belong to, I hasten to say, but an important one, and one I do not take for granted.
And then, last October, I started writing this blog; and it has been a joy and a delight for me.
Patheos asked us to celebrate the anniversary by highlighting our favorite posts over our time here. That’s not been very long, but here they are anyway.
- The Desolation of the Draggin’, on praying for random strangers.
- Fifteen Views of Christians by Non-Christians. This title always makes me think of Hokusai.
- The Oak and the Apple, on being all that we should be.
Plus, I’ve written a number of connected series of posts; you can also find them up on the menu, under “Series”:
- Blogging Aquinas: a look at the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas by way of his “shorter summa”, the Compendium Theologiae. (This one is just getting started.)
- Bootstrapping the Interior Life: on getting started with the interior life of prayer and devotion to God.
- S’Mary’s World: A background for a projected series of science fiction tales.
- The Woof Guide to Obscure Catholic Music: A tongue-in-cheek collection of posts about obscure Catholic musical groups you certainly haven’t heard of.
