#50-2-Follow: 50 NT Scholars to Read and Follow—Patrick Schreiner 2020-02-19T14:51:23-08:00 Nijay Gupta

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

This blog series spotlights 50 NT scholars and their research. The goal of this series is to introduce readers to a wider circle of scholarship than they have encountered before. The majority of people on this list are early or mid-career NT scholars who are doing great research and writing.

Introducing:

Dr. Patrick Schreiner

Associate Professor of New Testament Language and Literature

Western Seminary (Portland, OR)

Why do you love teaching and/or writing, and why does it bring you vocational satisfaction.

I love teaching because I love to see students realize the depth and beauty of the Scriptures and the God contained therein. My writing sharpens my thinking, keeps my research fresh, and improves my teaching. I also love the craft of writing and the task of saying things in memorable ways. Some of my happiest days are sitting in a coffee shop researching and writing all day.

What is one “big idea,” emphasis, or theme in your scholarship that you hope impacts the way students and scholars read and understand the NT?

When I teach I try to show students the “two worlds” of the NT. First, I show them how so much of the NT only makes sense in light of the OT. Second, I show them that much of it only makes sense in light of the Greco-Roman backdrop. I also am quick to jump to confessional/dogmatic topics as I practice Theological Interpretation of Scripture.

[NKG: samesies!]

Who is your academic hero and why? (someone you admire, someone you try to emulate in some way) Please name 1 or 2 people.

Jonathan Pennington – for his hermeneutical wisdom and love for the Gospels. Tom Schreiner – for his clarity of writing, kindness to others, and emulation of Christ.

Name 3 NT or Biblical Studies academic books that were formative for you as a student.

Richard Hays, Echoes of Scriptures in the Letters of Paul

Peter Leithart – Deep Exegesis

John Calvin – Institutes of the Christian Religion

Also, NT Wright’s Christian Origins and the Question of God Trilogy

If you ran into me at SBL, and you didn’t want to talk about New Testament studies, what would you want to talk about?

The Minnesota Vikings, all things food related in Portland, Oregon. Hiking in the PNW

What is a research/writing project you are working on right now that you are excited about?

I have a book on the Ascension coming out Summer 2020 with Lexham Press. Second, I am finishing up a commentary on Acts that will focus on biblical-theological and the narrative. Finally, I am working on an overview of the NT in visual form (literary design) with an artist.

[NKG: that cover is spectacular]
