Looking Through the Lens of Cynicism

Last updated on: May 18, 2018 at 3:44 pm   By MaryJo Petersen Castro

Each of us has a lens we see life and people through. The filter on the lens shapes our perspectives. Often, our perspectives are skewed making our judgments inaccurate and unaligned with God’s perspective. How does this happen? Our human filter (heart) has been corrupted by life’s negative experiences through heart wounds that manifest into a cynical attitude. Cynicism is undetectable because it can be justified. It’s disguised as insight, wisdom, and godliness, but it’s cloaked in open wounds; unresolved... Read more

God is Bigger Than Our Circumstances

Last updated on: May 11, 2018 at 3:28 pm   By Kathy Sherwin

Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 1 Peter 3:8 I learned this week that a friend of the family, Patricia, committed suicide. Patricia was experiencing some serious health issues and had become isolated and depressed. She began making remarks to her family like “everybody would be better off if I was not here”.   Tragically, Patricia’s personal pain became... Read more

Stepping Outside Our Comfort Zone

Last updated on: May 8, 2018 at 5:27 pm   By Ann White

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NLT) Has God placed a dream in your heart? Is He asking you to do something you believe is beyond your natural ability –– outside of your comfort zone? Dreaming focuses on the future, it sees beyond our current circumstances and abilities and looks toward the possibilities of what could be. God gives us dreams... Read more

How to Know if You Are Teachable

Last updated on: May 4, 2018 at 4:20 pm   By MaryJo Petersen Castro

Did you know having a teachable attitude makes us more likable by others, reduces conflicts in our life, grows us spiritually, personally and relationally, and gives us the ability to make positive changes in our life? “The know-it-all never esteems the one who tries to correct him. He refuses to seek good advice from the wise.”Proverbs 15:12 You’re teachable if you are open to correction, inquisitive, listen well, and apply what you learn. If you have a desire to... Read more

Forcing vs. Trusting

Last updated on: April 27, 2018 at 12:35 pm   By MaryJo Petersen Castro

Many of us are driven to make things happen in our life, at work, at home or in a relationship. There is nothing characteristically wrong with ambition. But there are times when we try to do for ourselves what only God can. “When God is in it, it flows. When the flesh is in it, it’s forced.” Joyce Meyer Here’s one good way to know if we’re working in the natural vs. working in the Spirit: anytime we feel frustrated,... Read more

Responsibility- My Response to His Ability

Last updated on: April 20, 2018 at 4:08 pm   By Kathy Sherwin

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. Exodus 14:13 Our culture tells us that it is our responsibility to navigate life based on our own resources – our intellect, our skills, and ability, even our appearance. As children of God, we often carry a burden we were never meant to carry. The Bible is full of stories of God’s great ability... Read more

Forebodings

Last updated on: April 14, 2018 at 6:09 pm   By MaryJo Petersen Castro

“All the days of the desponding and afflicted are made evil [by anxious thoughts and forebodings], but he who has a glad heart has a continual feast [regardless of circumstances].” Proverbs 15:15 Not long after I lost my job, I began to see detailed images in my mind of my family and I moving our belongs out of our house and into the street with nowhere to go. Fear, anxiety, and dread clenched my soul and an atmosphere of oppression... Read more
