Do you open your Bible and read words that address your exact situation? Do you hear sermons and think they’re speaking directly to you? Could it be — they are? How often do you recognize God’s efforts to get your attention?

One of my all-time favorite books is Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. This book has inspired millions of readers to encounter God on a deeper, more personal level. I remember reading Blackaby’s book shortly after it was published in the early 1990’s. I had been a Christian for about ten years and was desperately seeking to know God better. As I read, I was repeatedly reminded that God speaks directly to us through His Word. And, I was encouraged to rely on my Bible as my primary source of wisdom and guidance.

I began reading my Bible more often. It challenged my way of thinking and brought me comfort when I was hurting. The Word of God is alive and active. It inspires, encourages, and disciplines us — if we allow it to.

I’m always amazed at how God uses scripture to speak into my specific issues and circumstances. When I’m saying things I shouldn’t, God reminds me, to watch my tongue – so I will stay out of trouble (Proverbs 21:23). When I’m hurting, He promises to comfort me (2 Corinthians 1:4). When I’m stressed, God tells me to stop worrying and experience His peace (Philippians 4:6-7). And, when I’m exhausted, He encourages me to draw closer to Him so He can give me rest(Matthew 11:28).

2 Timothy 3:16 tells us, “all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives” (NLT). But, do we really believe it, do we allow Scripture to teach us, or do we simply go about our lives as if God isn’t speaking at all?

God’s Word has the power to breathe life into our moments of despair and shed light on our darkest hours. It has the ability to expose our issues and will urge us to change our ways. From the creation of the world, God’s Word has displayed its might. Therefore, we must give God and His Word the respect they deserve. When we disagree, disobey, or disregard God’s Word, we disagree, disobey, and disregard God.

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” (Hebrews 4:12 NLT).

When we truly embrace God and His Word, our lives begin to change for the better, our thoughts and outlook become more positive, and we begin to see life through God’s perspective  – one of hope for the future, rest for the weary, and with endless possibilities.

Are you allowing scripture to penetrate your life? Is it speaking to you now, encouraging you to persevere through your current life storm? Is God telling you to forgive yourself or someone else? Is He urging you to stop trying so hard and trust Him with your future? How often do you sit quietly before God and His Word? Will you listen to His teaching and do what He says?
