When God Deprives and Sacrificing to the Market

Last updated on: September 10, 2015 at 2:05 pm   By Artur Rosman

The attempt to identify and promote human flourishing is the sine qua non of a liberal society. But what the heck do you do when bad things happen to good people? Or even when bad things happen to kinda borderline people who are no innocent Job being tried by the whirlwind of life? Well, what about when life attacks and human flourishing is out of reach? The Canadian Catholic philosopher Charles Taylor has something to say about this in his A... Read more

Florida Man Wants You to Buy a Christian Assault Rifle

Last updated on: September 9, 2015 at 3:14 pm   By Artur Rosman

The state of Florida attracts the most interesting criminal activity that there are now tumblr, reddit, and twitter accounts dedicated to tracking headlines with the words “Florida Man.” I’ve been watching the car-crash horrible Amazon series Hand of God lately. It’s portrayal of fundamentalist, vaguely Pentecostal, Christianity as totally off-the-wall crazy and violent is both comical and disconcerting. The latter is the vibe I got when reading the following The Atlantic story about the antics of a Florida Man in... Read more

From Russia with Idols

Last updated on: September 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm   By Artur Rosman

I attempted to make something out of my nothing with my last post. It was a kind of creatio ex nihilo. I could probably continue along the same vein for a couple more weeks at the risk of boring all of my readers to death, pushing them off the cliff, or encouraging their binge drinking. Instead, it seems more appropriate to talk instead about another instance of creating something out of nothing: The obsession of some Catholics with reunion with “The... Read more

The Phenomenology of a Jim Beam Bourbon Firenado

Last updated on: September 5, 2015 at 3:52 pm   By Artur Rosman

Life is full of surprises. Surprises, by definition, are one-off events that cannot be anticipated or repeated at will. For this reason they escape the narrow limits imposed by some versions (not all) of “scientific facts“: the ability to be reproduced and rigorously tested. This doesn’t mean they are any less rational than the sorts of phenomena that can be tested in the lab. Even though they do not obey the criteria of scientific facts, they are no less real.... Read more

What’s the Most Epic Book Genre Mislabel in Publishing History?

Last updated on: September 3, 2015 at 11:04 am   By Artur Rosman

Have you ever noticed how nearly every book you’ve ever picked up that’s not self-published has a genre label in the upper corner of its back cover? Some books are notoriously difficult to label. I mean, what genre is Calasso’s The Ruin of Kasch, Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, or Herman Broch’s The Sleepwalkers? Are they fiction, history, philosophy, or something else altogether? So it’s clear that there are books that break genre boundaries. But then there are... Read more

New Historical Mists Shower Auschwitz with Hope

Last updated on: September 2, 2015 at 3:06 pm   By Artur Rosman

By now you might be past your knee-jerk reactions to the “showers” (misters, to be precise) placed outside the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum during the latest heat wave in Poland. If you actually did your due diligence then you know the analogy between what the Germans did and the mist “showers” is mostly bunk. Perhaps you’ve even read the Museum’s social media statement on the controversy: And one more thing. It is really hard for us to comment on some suggested historical... Read more

God? Not Available Right Now!

Last updated on: August 20, 2015 at 1:44 pm   By Artur Rosman

I think I first heard about the poet Anne Carson in Minding the Modern (read Part 1 and Part 2 of my interview with the author) where Eros the Bittersweet (listed by the Modern Library as one of the TOP100 non-fiction books of all time) is mentioned. Since then I found out Carson also wrote a book of poetry dedicated to theological reflection. But the Amazon reviews for Glass, Irony, and God, have been lukewarm at best or perhaps bittersweet?... Read more

Negative Certainties Trump Scientific Facts Daily

Last updated on: August 19, 2015 at 1:33 pm   By Artur Rosman

It is easy enough to debunk the mythical origins of science in the Greek and Roman world. That much is obvious. The idolization of “scientific facts” is a little bit more difficult. Modern philosophy and science tend to privilege positive and predicative knowledge as if it is the only type of certain knowledge available to us. Earlier epochs were much more appreciative of the plurality of knowledge than we. However, a forthcoming book from the University of Chicago Press is... Read more

The Newest News on the Authenticity of the Shroud of Turin

Last updated on: August 17, 2015 at 1:08 pm   By Artur Rosman

USA Today reports that new testing has pushed the Shroud of Turin back to Christ’s time: Many experts have stood by a 1988 carbon-14 dating of scraps of the cloth carried out by labs in Oxford, Zurich and Arizona that dated it from 1260 to 1390, which, of course, would rule out its used during the time of Christ. The new test, by scientists at the University of Padua in northern Italy, used the same fibers from the 1988 tests but disputes... Read more
