To Live is to Lead, Says Roy Goble 2019-04-01T14:00:37-07:00 Cara Meredith
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
As per the Tuesday usual, I’ve got another book and another author for you! Roy Goble is no stranger to leadership, nor is he a stranger to me or to using his privilege for good. I’m grateful for his influence in my life over the last fifteen years and can’t wait to introduce you to him and his new book, Salvaged. As per the usual, leave a comment if you want to win a copy!

Tell us a bit about yourself, will you? Let’s see…I married my high school sweetheart almost 40 years ago, we have two amazing adult kids, and we live in the SF Bay Area on a vineyard. I run a real estate investment firm in Silicon Valley, I’ve started several ministries including PathLight International, serve on several nonprofit boards, love classic cars, and enjoy great wine. Oh, and we do a lot of walking with our two golden retrievers.
Let’s talk about your book: what, in a nutshell, is Salvaged about anyway? In a nutshell it’s about leadership. But it’s a lot more than that. I grew up working in my Dad’s junkyard, so the leadership lessons are grittier than most. And a lot funnier! I hope the stories help readers understand we all lead at some point, and we can all find leadership inspiration in our everyday experiences…including boxes of donuts and homemade bazookas.
Do tell, what was the inspiration behind it? So many leadership books are boring! Plus, they share leadership insights as if we’re all running Fortune 500 companies or mega-churches. I wanted a book that I could relate to as an owner of a small business and founder of several small nonprofits. The chapters are short, simple, and fun. Hopefully everyone can find leadership inspiration from the book, not just folks with MBA’s.
How do you hope readers will be changed by your words? Leadership has been so commoditized that folks don’t realize we’re all leaders. Influence is leadership, and all of us influence someone. Doesn’t matter if we drive a UPS truck or work as a nurse on the nightshift. Every one of us influences the culture and people around us too. Finding this truth, and how Scripture clearly backs it up, can be transformative.

Lest we forget to ask, how have YOU been changed by writing Salvaged? Great question! I don’t think anyone has actually asked me that! Well, to begin with, it made me notice just how many leadership stories there are in Scripture. It was also fun to realize how big an influence my father was on my leadership style. We worked together, offices side by side, for 25 years, until the day he passed. He was a great father and mentor.
How and where can we find you on the internet? I’m on Twitter and Instagram at @roygoble, and feel free to send me an invite on Facebook. If you want to download a free chapter of the book (including the foreword by Bob Goff) then go to roygoble.com. If you want to follow my blog, go to junkyardwisdom.com. And since it’s already in the book, my email is [email protected].
