What Do You Want?

What do you want?

No, seriously. What?

What do you really want?

I don’t mean like, “What do you want for lunch?” Or, “What do you want to do this afternoon?” Though both of these could play into this. I mean, “What do you want that will ‘fix’ you?

What do you want that will satisfy?

What do you want that will turn the pain off? Or, what do you want that will at least turn it down for little while?

What do you want that you don’t yet have?

What do you want that someone else has?

Is it a certain number of “likes” or followers?

Is it for a certain person to like your picture?

Is it for a certain person to get elected? Or re-elected?

Is it to at least get offered the promotion?

Is it to make 3 more sales than Dan?

Is it to have your spouse be attracted to you like they used to?

Is it to be recognized for all you’ve done for God?

Is it to have security that you will be okay?

David wrote these shocking words: “I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1b)

That is astonishing.

The man who had struggled with lust and lying and power and feared for his life on a regular basis.

He got to a place where he was content. Completely content. His circumstances didn’t make him this way (see Psalm 23:4-5!). But his soul was at rest amidst the circumstances.

How?

“The LORD is my Shepherd” (Psalm 23:1a).

Consider him saying it this way: “The LORD is MY Shepherd!”

David got to where he could say “I don’t have any wants; I am completely at rest, content” because he situated himself under the care of the LORD. He had looked for other things to be his shepherd. He had been led by things he thought would complete him. But nothing did. . . except the LORD.

So, what is YOUR shepherd? Or, WHO is your shepherd? Do you even have a shepherd?

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you evaluate your heart. Ask Him to bring to your attention those areas that you look to to shepherd you apart from the LORD.

What do you need to adjust so you can attach to the real and true and good and loving and gracious Shepherd?
