Replacing Faith with Curiosity

Last updated on: October 2, 2013 at 5:12 pm   By Christian Piatt

Every day, my previously stable faith is replaced with a little more hungry curiosity. I consider this progress. Have posted this brief statement on my Facebook and twitter accounts yesterday and promptly received quite a bit of interest in return.  Not surprising, really, that my typical readership would resonate with such a claim, but I also found some surprising affirmations from those I would not have expected to appreciate  my sentiments. I write fairly often about moving away from emphasis... Read more

When Ministers Get Honest About Doubt

Last updated on: October 2, 2013 at 6:21 pm   By Christian Piatt

Following is excerpted from my larger weekly Bible Study, called Heretic’s Guide to the Bible. To read more, or to join the study, CLICK HERE or on the banners above or below the text. A friend of mine was a pastor at a church where she admitted to me that her congregation had different ideas about what fate looked like than she does. For them, the mark of true faith was a steadfast certainty that did not change from day-to-day.... Read more

Is Immortality Talk Just “Fear of the Dark?”

Last updated on: September 26, 2013 at 4:54 pm   By Christian Piatt

Renowned scientist and author of such books as “A Brief History of Time” Stephen Hawking suggested recently that it is conceivable in the future that we may be able to upload the contents of the human brain onto a computer so that the information may, in a sense, become immortalized. He readily conceded, however, that such a task was well beyond our current technological capacity, and he offered some measured words of caution for those who sought to read too... Read more

Science vs. Religion: A Race to Destruction?

Last updated on: September 25, 2013 at 5:01 pm   By Christian Piatt

First things first: with all due respect to interim host John Oliver, I for one am thrilled to have Jon Stewart back on The Daily Show.  I know it is sad to say, but I actually missed him while he was on summer hiatus.  Welcome back, little buddy! Last night, Stewart interviewed Richard Dawkins, author of “The God Delusion,”  who was promoting his newest title, “An Appetite for Wonder.” the most interesting moments in the interview revolved around Stewart’s question... Read more

Rich People Suck (Heretic’s Guide Reflection for 9/29/13)

Last updated on: September 23, 2013 at 7:57 pm   By Christian Piatt

This is part of the weekly Heretic’s Guide to the Bible study series. To read more, or to take part in the study, CLICK HERE, or click on the Heretic’s Guide banners above or below.  Rich people are jerks. They’re greedy, selfish, and don’t care about anyone else. That computer software guy may be the antichrist. Money is just plain evil. I’ve heard statements about the evils of wealth and the corruption of people of means. Sometimes people quote scripture... Read more

Church Sign Epic Fails, “When Satan Attacks” Edition

Last updated on: September 22, 2013 at 3:17 pm   By Christian Piatt

I was minding my own business, playing some Madden 2013, when Satan was all, like, “Dude gimme your tots.” and I was like, “Who are you, Napoleon Dynamite?” and he was all, “No, bro, I’m Satan.” and I was like, “Then gimme your tots, punk!” True story. Read more

Snake Handlers, NPR Geek-Outs and White Power

Last updated on: September 20, 2013 at 8:31 pm   By Christian Piatt

We’re honored and more than a little geeked out of our skin this week on the Homebrewed Christianity CultureCast to have John Burnett, Religion Correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR in the biz, yo) as our guest. John was in Portland doing a story on our Beer and Hymns and about singer/songwriter Josh Garrels, so I roped him into sitting down with me for a chat. John talks about his wild year thus far as NPR’s religion reporter, including his... Read more

Five Things that are Holding Christianity Back

Last updated on: September 19, 2013 at 9:29 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’m often asked about what trends I see within Christianity, both good and bad. So in my ongoing effort to help name trends and offer an alternative way of thinking about our faith, here are the five biggest things I’ve seen that tend to keep us from doing our best work as the living, breathing body of Christ in the world today. Church Buildings – Many of our church buildings were established in a time when Christianity was booming numerically in... Read more
