Reconcile: An Interview with John Paul Lederach

Last updated on: September 8, 2014 at 6:57 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’ve had the chance to speak with author and international peace activist John Paul Lederach about his book, “Reconcile: Conflict Transformation for Ordinary Christians.” The book, updated from an earlier edition with a new introduction from Bill and Lynne Hybels and contemporary stories, is a powerful guide on how to seek and realize peace among us on both local and global scales. Having traveled the world brokering peace agreements between governments and rebel groups, and having risked his own lives... Read more

Stupid Quizzes, CCM Missives and Homebrewed Blisses

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 10:07 pm   By Christian Piatt

Yeah, the title’s a stretch. So what? This week’s episode of Homebrewed CultureCast is all Everyday Sunday, all the time. We hung out with Trey and Carter from the uber-popstar band both at Wild Goose (yes, there’s more you haven’t heard yet) and in the garage at Amy and Christian’s place while they were in Oregon for a couple of shows. First up is a new segment affectionately known as Ten in the Den, where guests are submitted to ten completely... Read more

Is Capitalism Un-Biblical?

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 1:52 am   By Christian Piatt

I teach a weekly Sunday School class at our church. Usually we take a question each week from my “Banned Questions” book series and talk about it. But this past week was different. I simply couldn’t sit through half of a day in a context of discipleship and worship and not talk about the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO. We talked about privilege, systemic oppression and violence, and a poverty of hope. We discussed the fallacy of living in... Read more

The Greatest Commandment: Further Evidence Jesus was a Radical Subversive

Last updated on: August 19, 2014 at 9:56 pm   By Christian Piatt

I was asked today how, with all of the crazy stories in the Bible, we ever begin to use that same collection of stories, poems, historical accounts and laws to really discern what God wants. Good question. First, I think we have to consider how we understand God, and therefore, the Bible. For me, I don’t understand God as some humanoid supernatural being who has wants, desires and such like us. When it suggests as much in scripture, I think... Read more

This week’s show runs a bit long, but it’s chock full of such good stuff! Like, why do you get sunburned when you go skiing? Amy knows the answer, and it might surprise you… What’s a “keezer” and why are Andy and Christian so geeked out about it? Hear Christian and Amy pile on Andy for bringing his own insulated cup places and putting his pajamas on right after dinner. Andy and Amy channel their inner Zach Galifianakis and turn... Read more

Is Christianity Keeping People Poor?

Last updated on: August 16, 2014 at 6:40 pm   By Christian Piatt

Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.                         -Matthew 25:40 At the heart of the Christian Gospel is an unequivocal mandate to care for the poor, the marginalized and the disenfranchised. We are to be both stewards and advocates, companions and champions for those who lack the voice and privileges from which we benefit. Most Christian church communities respond, at... Read more

Michael Brown, Iraq, Putin, Gaza: How to Reconcile the Brokenness?

Last updated on: August 14, 2014 at 6:33 pm   By Christian Piatt

A soon-to-be college-bound Michael Brown is shot by Missouri police, reportedly while holding his hands above himself in surrender, and while unarmed. The resulting protests turn violent, leading ultimately to police setting up barricades, complete with snipers, tear gas and flash grenades. Local stores are decimated and scores are injured in the resulting tensions. Not long ago, Eric Garner, another African-American man, died of suffocation while being submitted to a choke submission hold by a New York Policeman. Last year... Read more

Five Reasons post-Christianity is Good for Us

Last updated on: August 12, 2014 at 7:43 pm   By Christian Piatt

Anyone who has been paying attention knows that Christianity is in decline in the western world by all accounts. From progressive mainline churches to evangelical mega-churches, most institutional religious bodies are experiencing precipitous drops in attendance and giving. Meanwhile, the Christian voice in the civil and political conversations is also giving way to other perspectives, be they Jewish, Muslim or secular humanist. It’s no longer a dark mark on one’s social character to say they don’t go to church, or even... Read more
