If You Meet God On the Road, Kill Him

Last updated on: September 30, 2011 at 7:21 pm   By Christian Piatt

I was talking to a woman at Church on Sunday who has been through more than her share of hard times. She wears her life in the lines on her face and along the scars and blemishes on her fragile hands. Through it all, she’s held on to her faith in God. But the relationship has, at times, been strained by hardship. “I know everything happens for a reason,” she said, “but sometimes I just can’t imagine what the reason... Read more

Would You Change?

Last updated on: September 29, 2011 at 6:28 pm   By Christian Piatt

We play a lot of “secular” songs in our worship services ta Milagro. I use this term without entirely knowing what it means, namely because I’ve never met the mysterious panel of judges who apparently determines which songs are secular and which are sacred, likely in the dark basement of some old church in central Europe somewhere. Semantics aside, I enjoy taking songs people typically wouldn’t hear in worship and re-purposing them for a worship context. We play everything from... Read more

Trolls, Avatars and the Convertible Effect

Last updated on: September 28, 2011 at 9:18 pm   By Christian Piatt

I remember when I first learned about the atrocities of the Holocaust in school. I could not imagine the type of person who could do such things to another person. I remember one particular story about an SS Soldier who would return home after a day of putting Jews in the ovens, kiss his children on the forehead and read the paper over dinner. Was an entire nation of people born void of their soul? It would actually be more... Read more

Eddie Izzard on Biblical Literalism (Explicit)

Last updated on: September 26, 2011 at 11:31 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’ve long been a big fan of comedian Eddie Izzard. In this video he has some fun with a couple of the more well-known stories of the Bible like the creation of the universe and Noah’s Ark. He uses humor to show the difficulty of maintaining a belief in Biblical literalism. A good reminder not to take our faith quite so seriously sometimes. I got a good laugh out of this today and thought I’d share. Enjoy, Christian Read more

Rob Bell Leaves Mars Hill: Bad Idea?

Last updated on: September 24, 2011 at 5:15 pm   By Christian Piatt

When Rob Bell, a bestselling author and pastor of one of the most prominent churches in the country, decides to leave the pulpit, it’s big news. Bell’s most recent book, “Love Wins,” has sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and the suggestion in its pages that God’s salvation is universal hasn’t gone over well with some Christians. Though Bell has not been pushed out of Mars Hill, the combination of the controversy around his work and his individual success as... Read more

To medicate or not to medicate?

Last updated on: September 23, 2011 at 4:15 pm   By Christian Piatt

My seven-year-old son, Mattias is amazing. I know, everyone thinks their kid is special, but Mattias baffles most adults he meets. He’s been going through a lot of tests over the last nine months because of some behavioral and emotional challenges he deals with, and there really is no consensus about his issues. Most experts seem to think he’s a “textbook aspie,” which is shorthand for Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s is at the high end of the autism spectrum, though even... Read more

Grace in the Face of Violence

Last updated on: September 22, 2011 at 4:50 pm   By Christian Piatt

Two recent stories struck an emotional chord with me that I’m still trying to sort out. First involved the execution of Troy Davis in Georgia, where he was accused of killing a police officer. Second had to do with the arrest of several Amish men for refusing to comply with local traffic safety laws in Kentucky. I know these may seem completely unrelated, but for me there’s a powerful connection. The story about Troy Davis and the ongoing questions of... Read more

Doing a new thing

Last updated on: September 21, 2011 at 8:04 pm   By Christian Piatt

Okay, so I copped a bit of scripture from Isaiah for the blog title. But it kind of fits. Although my blog is the same content-wise, it’s now hosted, as of today, on Patheos. I’ve been working with Deborah Arca, the Progressive Christian editor at Patheos, for a couple of week on the move, and we finally made it happen today. In theory, if you’re a subscriber to my blog by way of my website, you should still get the... Read more

Killed by a Castle

Last updated on: September 20, 2011 at 10:41 am   By Christian Piatt

We spent a few days in Pagosa Springs, one of our favorite getaway spots in Colorado. Although there’s not much in the way of nightlife, we wouldn’t have much use for it anymore even if they did, seeing as how we have one-plus kids in tow. The highlight of Pagosa is the hot springs, which include more than a dozen manmade pools, all fed by a mixture of river and natural hot spring water. The smell all around the place... Read more

System Failure: Reflections on “Raised Right”

Last updated on: September 15, 2011 at 10:33 pm   By Christian Piatt

There are plenty of criticisms offered against today’s American youth and young adults. And despite the fact that I turn forty in a few weeks, I still consider myself among them: a kindred spirit of cultural orphans, still sifting through the detritus of an evaporating American Dream to figure out who we might be without it. Alisa Harris’ memoir, RAISED RIGHT: How I Untangled My Faith from Politics, reflects on the apparent cultural, spiritual and economic desert time in which... Read more
